Welcome to all the newcomers! I have been absent for awhile and its fun to come back and see newbies on the thread!

I'm excited about a splash pair of silkies that I just picked up in NC from Bat Cave Silkies. Most of my partridge flock has come from Sandy (as well as some of my blacks) and I just LOVE LOVE her and her birds. I hope to be hatching out some splash beauties later this fall

Hmmm....I'm hoping to go to the swap you all are planning, or at least the one in Clinton County. I've never been to one...and I will be sure to leave my purse in the car! I have some extra showgirl and silkie boys that need to find some new homes, so that sounds like a good option.

Ugh I'm so upset with myself right now. Yesterday I noticed that one of my pens was a bit too crowded and my two silkie roos were getting stepped on, so I moved them to another pen with my BR, EE, sebrights and OEGB hen. I was concerned because the EE can be a bully sometimes but they seemed to get along just peachy. I went out this morning and they were great, too. I just went out a few minutes ago to make sure they made it through the heat ok and my favorite one, the blue silkie roo with SUCH a sweet personality, had the skin ripped right off the back of his head. My poor baby, it kills me to think he could have been suffering for hours. The worst part is just knowing in my gut the EE had something to do with it and I caused it. Thankfully my dad was here visiting and was raised on a meat chicken farm so he ended his suffering for me, lord knows I couldn't have done it myself.

for future reference: ive seen skulls exposed on chickens, as long as you keep them clean and away from flies they will heal to the point of "you cant tell" in a month. if the spot is no larger than a quarter on large fowl, or a dime on bantams - just rub some Neosporin on it and separate them - I usually bring them in a house to help keep flies off of them. if you can keep it out of their eyes bluecoat works well too, I have hand painted it on but that can be a process.

OK, I have been gone for way to long. Where is the swap and when? You guys have lost me even though I have tried to read through it all.

im hoping for the September dates, I think I can help more people out with what they are looking for. if we go for august I still have several, just not the selection.

So sorry that happened to you. Thank goodness for Dads tho.

I know lots of people like their EEs but we had to get rid of our because they were just so agressive. Even killed one of our Buff Orp girls that was much bigger and one of my blue Marans. Hubs and I have agreed we'll never have them again.

Have you pulled your other roo out of there?

I'm so sorry! That is a hard thing to handle. Your heart was in the right place, doing what you felt was best for your little roo. We all have been, or will, be there sometime.

). My ameraucanas, in contrast, are total pussycats. So it's lav ams and ccl for blue eggs from here on in, and isbars for green ones! Although I might try a couple of the Iowa Blues sometime, just for fun

I have OEs who seem aggressive but only to the younger chicks. They don't bother the hens. Hoping they will mellow with age.
My Ameraucana girls 1 LA & 1 SA are gentle sweeties.
Have a pair of Iowa Blues & they are also very sweet.

I am very interested in isbars. I am actually debating on getting some eggs to hatch if temps go down again. Well that and if I don't get killed soon for having a million chickens running around.

But I'm slowly getting to be exactly where I want to be in regards to the breeds I want. Isbars are #2, #1 being black silkies.

I hope to be hatching Isbars early winter and spring so if you are interested in eggs, let me know.

Yesterday, I noticed that one of my Welsummer hen's foot looked a little swollen so I soaked her in an epson salts bath (which they all seem to like and always feel refrehed and healthier afterwards). I did it mainly to clean her feet up. I noticed a round spot of dark dirt on the bottom of her pad that didn't come off. Last night, I looked in my chicken book for foot sores and injuries and found out that she has bumblefoot which I had never heard of. The spot of dirt was actually the scab. I researched on this sight and found directions to remove and wrap it. There is hard stuff under the scab that also has to come out. I did the "surgery" today in the kitchen as per directions and I think all went well. I'll check it tomorrow. Another day in poultryville!
