Hello! We are in Jackson, which is about 40 mins west of Athens. We have a breeding pair of Cayugas, 7 Cayuga ducklings, 2 Silver Appleyard Ducklings (both drakes, we're looking for some hens!), a Mallard hen, and 26 guineas. We'll be butchering some of the guineas soon, and are looking to get some Buff Orpingtons probably (for their setting abilities, I think our incubator skills aren't so great, lol), and probably do a batch of freedom rangers this year. We got the adult Cayugas and the Mallard last year and are loving our expanding flock of birdies. I'd really love to start breeding Silver Appleyards, they're so pretty and they seem to have sweeter personalities than the Cayugas, lol.

So many new Ohioans since I last checked this page, welcome to all!

Here's a topic: Who feeds organic? Where do you buy it and is there any bulk options near you? I have many feed mills near me but none stock organic grains so I am interested to know if any other do.

We were getting feed from Greggs Organics (I think that's the right name) but she stopped and now Maysville Elevator in Apple Valley is carrying the organic feed. It's about an hour north of Columbus, maybe that's semi close to you? I am grateful to have found a farmer down here who is going to be getting his organic feed delivered along with another farm's non-organic order from Maysville, so no 6 hr round-trip drive for feed for us! (Which more than likely wouldn't have happened.) Maybe you can make a similar arrangement with someone near you if the drive is to far for you as well?

We have a local Yahoo group of chicken keepers and we started ordering from Highland Naturals as a group. Delivered to a central location and picked up from there. It comes all the way from Louisville, KY, but is the best deal we've all found for organic, non-GMO, and organic feeds, plus they have a line for the cattle and goat keepers.

I am in Coshocton Ohio, about 2 hours from Cleveland, an hour from Canton and always have extra roosters. Usually they get eaten. If you want to come down and pick one you are welcome to and they are all friendly. Nasty temperament is not tolerated. If you come, come of an evening cause a ain't chasing down a freebie lol!

Any suggestions on how to keep the chickens cool?
They have plenty of water, but they are just panting and panting.
Big run 20 x 20 enclosed with hardware cloth from top to bottom.

Panting is how chickens keep cool. You could put a tarp over a portion of the run. Some use fans. Panting is normal tho.

also if corn is a large % of their diet or treats you may want to find another feed or treat for them. While breaking down in their system corn causes a lot of heat. I switch to mixed scratch grains as a scratch treat when it is hot. They do.t seam to pant and such as much.

Hello Buckeyes,

I need some help for a fellow BYC'er. She is traveling thru Ohio to and from Oklahoma to pick up here horse that was stolen from her. Here is the problem. She has contacted over 20 overnight stables and not one has returned her call. Can anybody offer a good lead or even a place to stop for a few hours to give her gelding a rest. It is an 18 hour trip in good weather.

They are willing to pay for the stall or paddock. I met her here on BYC and am just trying to help someone who had somthing precious taken from them returned. She is going to pick him up instead of using a horse transport company. I don't blame her, I would too.
