***OKIES in the BYC III ***

No, I don't have any of that. I think he must've aspirated something. From his crop, or water went down the wrong pipe or whatever. He's warm and in a crate on towels right now. I don't want to disturb him (but I'm listening to him every second) because that makes it harder for him to breathe. I've been reading about aspiration pneumonia and lots of time they just outright die pretty fast without the owner even knowing what went wrong. If he doesn't make it I'm going to just be heartbroken

I thought I could take it if one of my adults died but I lied! This isn't easier than losing a baby!

do you have any vapo rub? you can use that also, it will help him breath better- there is no need to assume he is dying....give him what support you can

If he's got fluid in his lungs though the VaporRub won't help I don't think. I wish I hadn't thrown away my heat vaporizer thing. I have some Vicks stuff you put in a vaporizer. But I really don't think it's humidity he would need if he's aspirated something. That had to have been what happened because it came on so fast. I hope he'll make it til morning to see the vet. Seriously-he does sound like each breath is his last.

Faery, me and you have sucky luck lately. I've lost 2 Silkies and 2 Cochins pullets to that e. coli crap.

I wish I knew what this was. My daughter gave the last silkie chick a stuffie (and yes, it's bleachable) so it'll have something soft to lay with tonight.

ok, a facebook friend suggested this: she is in canada, so her terms aren't quite the same

he caught the lurgy... could be any cause for respiratory illness, if it's not viral (caught from another chicken) then it might be bacterial and Oxine will clear it right up... otherwise a shot of Tylan-200 in the breast muscle, isolation, rest, warmth - act fast because I've seen chickens go from healthy to dead in less than two days, suffocating on thick phlegm...

fairy- what symptoms do the chicks show? has the bedding been changed for this one? so there might be no reinfection? eating drinking?

Have been doing a complete bedding change every time one gets sick/dies. Today I managed to actually catch one getting sick, all the others have just literally gotten sick & died while I was either asleep or at work. This morning the chick was kind of unsteady on it's feet, but still eating & drinking. We dosed with molasses water & vitamins (non-iron). When I got off work, it was down. Crop was empty, poo appeared normal. Complete bedding change (again, did one this morning too) and removed the sick chick from the still well one (probably should have done that this morning, but most likely it was already too late

). Dee and I babied it this evening so at least it died after being loved. However this evening it did have watery vomit, no chunks or anything and not discolored... just some watery vomit. Shortly after that, it died.

Yea, I've got oxine.........how would I do it? I don't have a humidifier. Would I boil some water with oxine in it? And hold it down by him to breathe?
