There's high as in $75 and there's high as in $200.

Yep,
I will simply say make good friends.. and show vaible interest in the birds.
A bird is worth what a person is willing pay regardless of anything else. There are birds that go well above any $ value in my opinion, and there is a stopping point as well. It is all based on what a person wants and what they willing to do to get it.
Sometimes developing a relationship and being patient is well worth the wait and gifts sometimes ocour as well.

I'll bet'cha I can find another bird somewhere I'm thrilled with for $20 and not have to suck up

I'm not interested in breeding & showing. Mine's a whole different mindset. I'm not in birds to make money, I'm in it for a hobby. I do it because I get attached to them and want to take care of them. There's some birds I'd spend a lot of money to buy (but not $200). But I'm a lot more apt to pull a dirty filty mite-ridden mutt rooster with a broken leg out of the ditch and blow the grocery money on him. Then eat macaroni & cheese for 3 wks. Just different priorities. 'Sides, I want lots of critter company in Heaven when I get there.

You sound like me. BillyClyde (my serama) has a messed up foot. It doesnt seem to bother him much. As soon as we saw him we knew he was the one we wanted.

I'm feeling your pain lol! I went and tucked my birds in and checked water and it's already starting to ice up. If it makes you feel better their body temp is 105. They're little heaters just by themselves. Add all those feathers and they stay toasty.
(I'm just trying to make you feel better, I'm worried sick about mine, too).

I understand, but quite often when you know the folks that have them and talk to them in detail they often one or two extras that are gifted...

It is a good thing your not in it for teh money because that is a race everyone doing this right looses on. Its a hobby and a labor of love, that will seldom pay for it's self much less anything extra.
I do this because I enjoy it, I enjoy teh under-dog varieties the ones that need the help and work put into them. making all they can be is what I enjoy then turing them out for others to see and peak some interest. It is a stress relief and pleasure.

That is funny. Serama folks are among the "worst".
I would keep a little frizzle like that inside too. I baby my birds big time - warm oatmeal on cold mornings.
Do you have a garage? Mostly they need protection from the North wind.

Years ago we were going to pick up a Pyrenees puppy. The breeder had become a good friend and she'd told me one of the puppies had a pretty bad under-bite. We drove 10 hrs to Rock Ford, CO and the entire way I'm fussing at my husband, "I'm NOT taking the under-bite puppy! I don't want to deal with problems, I don't want that puppy. You can't make me take that under-bite puppy!" Guess which puppy we took home?

Named him Jonah and he lived a long long time and never had any problems chewing.
(Found his pics on the web just now from years ago when I'd posted them on Pyr lists).

Nice looking eggs! Having blue or green egg laying hens is on my wishlist for later down the road. Aren't they upside down though? I have read that eggs should be stored with the big end up.

Not sure about the correct way, but I don't think it matters unless your planning on hatching them? could be wrong on that though, they just fit in the carton better big side down.

I have a frizzle in my bathroom. She is pretty much feathered now except for her head. She has lived there since we got her.
