It's still too dark to feed and water without carrying a flashlight, so I'm in having my coffee and looking forward to the sale in Coweta tonight.

Rebbecca - We considered getting llamas for livestock guardians until we found Vesta. She's the best coyote, skunk, possum, and nuisance deterrent we've ever had.

Well she seems to be getting a little better. If she was lethargic or anything or looked like she was in pain I would end her suffering. She looks like she has a bad cold. I looked very similar to this when I had a bad head cold last year. Hubby and I decided to do what we can and see what happens. I don't know when/if we will put her with the other chickens again. My chickens are not exactly the same kind of pets as my dogs or cats, but I am attached enough that I don't want to cull her. If she dies I will feel kinda for a minute. If one of my dogs died I would cry for days. I haven't had her that long. Thank you everybody for your opinions and advice. It really helps to get a different perspective especially from people far more experienced and knowlegable about this then I am.

I've always felt that sort of thing was overblown. The more free ranging my birds are, the healthier they seem to be. In fact, I think that whole biosecurity thing is often over hyped. The only thing I tend to worry about is auction birds. And now I rarely buy anything that isn't fresh out of an egg, or I'm buying from a source I trust.

When something DOES get sick, it either makes it on its own or I cull it, if it looks like it won't make it and is just suffering. I never medicate. I don't want those genetics in my flock, and I certainly don't want to pass them on to somebody else.

But then, I see birds as work animals, here to produce food and improve the soil. If I did the pet or the show thing, though, I would probably feel differently. For instance, I do medicate my dogs and cats when they are sick.
