Your just teasing me now, saying there is going to be adult game roosters.

Solid black down is a Birchen base (Genetic e-locus), Black with white breast is extended black (e-locus) This does not affect final color though may affect pattern to some degree.

Well I had to go look that up, LOL but now I understand a bit better about the genetics. I got a crash course over at http://poultrygenetics.bravehost.com
My brain is spinning a bit now but all is good!

I can't wait....

Yes, we saw a live cougar about 5 miles from the house, running down into a creek, so we are well within her range. Then there was a bobcat killed not more than two miles from our house.

But a badger is certainly a possibility. Still, my gut says if I had a couple more dogs, whatever it was might not have tried to get to my critters, thus sparing both it and my dogs a good deal of trouble. So, I'm still shopping. A friend from the Sustainable Self site suggests an Anatolian/GSD mix. Now THERE'S a dog!

[Question: Is there such a thing as "Dog Math"?]

Oh Yes!

Yep, sure is.

If it don't bark, (Cats don't count here) it ain't a dog.

Therefore, Puppys aren't real dogs.

The mothers are careing for the puppys, so they're mothers, and not considered dogs.

Guard dogs are doing a job of protecting your flock, so they're employees and can't be counted as dogs.

Old lazy dogs are considered retired, so not in the dog system.

Tiny dogs are not real dogs because they're to small and considered ankle biters.

and long haired ones are dust mops, so not really dogs either.

I'd better quit now before I get in trouble here.

If it sleeps in the house or on you bed...it isn't a dog. It's a child replacement.

Been building pens today. These are about 5 1/2 feet long and at the bottom about 2 foot wide. They were made out of some old bread racks. My dad back in the early 60's worked at a Bills Backery in Clinton Ok. They replaced a bunch of bread racks and dad brought them home. I run across some of these the other day and picked thru them and got all the better ones. Dad used them in hog pens, goat pens etc thru the years and some were shot. Little bit of wire and some grates on the end and poof, I have pens. i have enough to make about 6 or 7 of these pens. The newspaper in Clinton sales aluminum sheets that has something to do with their printing for a dollar or two apiece. I plan on buying some of that to cover one end so the birds will have shade and be protected from rain. The sheet metal in this picture is ok, but I only found the one piece, and aluminum will be lighter. I am going to use them in the garden to pull down the rows so my young chickens can do weed and bug control.

Nice pens...good idea.

Well, I may be out of the loop for the next week... Hubby may get to come home this weekend for one week before heading out to afghanistan where he will be for the next year...

I will be spending time with him, hopefully getting alot of stuff taken care of while he is here, before he is going to be gone for a long time.

Spring break is this next week, so glad he might get to come home during this time to spend time with Montana as well...

Talk to you guys later on next week!

Have a great week and tell hubby he and the family will be on my prayer list.

Can't sleep so caught up on the thread.

We spent today working on constrution of the extension of my hen house. Hubby, his brother and I moved the supply shelf and built the 2x4 structure. Tomorrow (now today) we will put up the tin siding and build the door. Electric will be done later. Then the wall between the old house and the new section will be moved..
I"m taking pictures along the way.
Oh happy day!!!

Actually what you need is llamas. They don't eat chickens, they will keep your trees, shrubs and grass trimmed, they don't bark and dogs are naturally repelled by them. The price of feeding a couple of llamas is about the same as feeding one big dog.
You do have to have more then one because a single llama is a lonely llama and then they start seeing you as a llama and that is no bueno.
Here is another thing about llamas. They are a mystery, people who would brave a yard with a dog will not go in a yard with a llama in it, because most people do not know squat about them. Some of the things people think they know about llamas is crazy. A lady asked once if I had any burns scars from the acid the llamas spit. She actually thought llamas spit acid, No kidding. Plus my boys are big. Skylar is 6 ft tall and Dexter is about 5' 10" but when they rear up both are almost 8 ft tall. And both are nearly 300lbs. So few people want to mess with them because of their size. Oh and lets not forget the two claws they have on each foot. They can and will gut a dog, coyote but I have never heard of them doing this to a human. I guess they could if they wanted to. Skylar has become really protective and he has reared up on a couple of people who have come on my property because he was protecting me. But in reality he is a bit of a wuss and a good yelling will keep him back. Or a punch in then nose, he hates when I do that.
Now a days people are giving them away, or real cheap. Check craigslist, I see postings about once a week for them.
Just a thought.

Good Morning Okie's

It's still too dark to feed and water without carrying a flashlight, so I'm in having my coffee and looking forward to the sale in Coweta tonight.

Rebbecca - We considered getting llamas for livestock guardians until we found Vesta. She's the best coyote, skunk, possum, and nuisance deterrent we've ever had.
