Peaches, that must be so hard on your family.
Those of you who breed OEGB might know the answer to this, hopefully. If this chick came from a brown/red rooster and a Wheaton pullet (if I spelled that right)-would you think it was a male or female if it were yours? It's 10 days old. Is this to be expected from those 2 colors?

You will know by comb size at 3 weeks of age. Males will develop a more pronounced comb by then. From that cross I would not expect that result, the light leg, looks to have a duckwing type stripe on back, which does not exist in either variety, but then again wheaton restricts black very well.

I have a question for all the marans breeders. I hatched out some chicks from eggs bought at an auction. On the carton it said they were black coppers and the eggs were a fairly dark color. What I need to know *can black copper chicks be all black? a few have white on the underside, one has white only on the wings and the rest are all black. Now that they are getting feathers the ones with the most white are getting the brown feathers in over the wings. Should I post pics? LOL

Solid black down is a Birchen base (Genetic e-locus), Black with white breast is extended black (e-locus) This does not affect final color though may affect pattern to some degree.

Well I got an egg today from LF Lemon Blue cochin. How do I tell if it is fertile?

I lost two chicks this week. They were acting tired the day before, but no other symptoms. I am still nursing the one with the upper respiratory thing. Her eyes are swollen shut so I'm feeding her and giving her water with medicine in it. Cleaning her eyes and nose at least three times a day. This little bugger better make it! LOL How long do y'all think these things last and how long will she be contagious? So far none of the other birds are showing the same symptoms, so I think we separated her early enough.

There is a product on the market called Denagard, the active ingrediant is a drug called Tiamulin and is formulated to not interact with any human type drugs. Very effective against CRD in birds but it is pricey, about $40.00 a quart but you don't use much.

Another drug called LS-50 is water soluble and is more readily available. I use 1 tablespoon per gallon of water for treatment. Smith Poultry Supply up in Ks. stocks it and they offer overnight shipping as well.

Most birds are carriers of diseases of some type. It's usually stress that lets the disease take hold and get the bird down.

Well I got an egg today from LF Lemon Blue cochin. How do I tell if it is fertile?

Put it in the incubator and let it cook for about a week and then candle it. The other way is to crack it open and look with a microscope for the fertilized germoplast ( I think that's what it's called) But why waste a chick if it is fertile?

I know that because my brother has been an OK game warden for a verrrrryyyy long time. When wildlife is caught for relocation or released, the wardens are very much in the loop. I realize this is a touchy subject for many, but you have the extremes of "there are no long tail black cats in N.America, or there are no cougars established in OK."...etc. to the "we have to drive around a black panther that is laying in our driveway every morning when we go to work" You can see where it all becomes a heated discussion.

There is a draw around here that is a regular hiway for those cats and I ran across it by accident over 35 years ago. I could not believe the number of tracks and being curious I started tracking them. I've seen quite a few Cougars through the years and I know that I have been closer then I should have been at times. That is what I like about a light dusting of snow, it's tracking time!!

I think a lot of the stories about the black cats are because most of the time you see the cats in a low-light situation which makes them look darker then they are. If I remember right they used to be called ghosts of the prarie way back when. I can see why too because in the blink of an eye they can just disappear.

Tony O ,I have to agree with you on the black cats in Okla! When I worked security at the Flint Ridge Developement in eastern Okla. years ago I personally saw black panthers/cougars there. There is also and has been for years a good population of the normal colored cougars living in that area also. I have also personaly seen several of those.I am like cowboy.there is no way I would belive any thing the gov. put out as a fact!lol And I'm sure there are a lot of things that go down in the Wildlife Dept just like any other dept that is on a "need to know" bascis. Any way I am like others and amased at the new miagration of the wild critters these days. Seems we are't the only ones being affected by the change. this old earth is going thru. Talked to my sister in Calif. tonight and she said it was cold there. They have had over a year of below normal temps(we're talking several degrees) . So much for "sunny Calif"!lol

Mitzi, if I don't get my paws on eggs this weekend you could borrow my brinsea Eco 20/ and see how you like it I haven't put a lot of eggs in but out of them only 1-2 fertile eggs didn't make it. It does good work

Hiya Gang!! Been busy for a few days I acquired the flooring from some basketball courts and have been hauling it to store here a load a day it's kicking my butt too LOL It sure has some nice grain in the maple quite a bit of birds-eye in it,

I was taking a break sitting here and in came my wayward new dog that's been AWOL for a while he got loved on then a bite to eat and gone again, Not sure where he's hanging out at but someone has taken off his collar, I'm gonna set up a place for him the next time he drops by and see if I can get him fixed before he gets to run off again, I'm thinking he may be coming in to eat when I'm not home also.

I was hoping to make Newcastle sale but going to be covered up with figuring out how to stack and store the rest of the flooring so it don't ruin, I have so much I see some chickens living in maple wood lined houses LOL
