***OKIES in the BYC III ***

On the auction BCM eggs I hatched out a feather legged brown EE. Bought the eggs @ Blanchard sale. Who ever is selling the eggs doesn't keep there hens separated from other Roos IMO. Not thrilled when you consider the price of deep dark BCM eggs.

WOW, that would tick me off too. Those little darlings don't sell cheap and to then get a 'mutt' hatch would send me over the edge. That is why all our hatching eggs come from mating groups that are in their own coops and runs. Hopefully your feather leg EE's will be pullets that will lay nice olive eggs at least.

Oh man. I wish I knew this before I started nursing the poor thing back to health. If it must be done it must. I don't think I can do it now that I have been feeding it and taking care of it. Maybe hubby can do it. I'll figure it out I guess. Thanks for the advice.
From everything I read if they have anything respitory you cull. They can be carriers of it even after they are "cured" from it. I couldn't take that risk so had to cull 2 of our pullets that came down with this. I felt bad doing it but I can't risk it in my flock and sure wouldn't want them to infect anyone else's flock. Sorry you are going through this with your birds as well. It is hard when you feel like you are doing your best and you still loose them.

Well let me tell the symptoms first. It has swollen bubbly eyes.I can't tell if it has a snotty nose or if its just gunk from the eyes. It has no trouble breathing. It is eating now that I cleaned its eyes really well and it can see a bit. I removed the other chicks fairly quickly and they are showing absolutely no symptoms.
with respiratory, it isn't always a cull situation, each one is different- i'll have to look in my files and post some info

I think that's probably overkill considering wild birds constantly bring some sort of virus, bacteria or disease in literally every time they stop in your yard. The neighbor 4 miles down the road who bought some hens at a flea market or auction? Those same wild birds just visited them and dragged disease to your house. Plus it's springtime, wild birds along with their diseases are in full swing. Not to mention you have no way of knowing if any auction birds or adults you get have been exposed at some point in their life and are still carriers. Add to that the fact that some diseases are carried in the egg to the hatchlings.
RetriedArmyWife, there's literally thousands upon thousands of different respiratory diseases in chickens. Some can be primary and some can be secondary to other things that ran the birds immune system down. It's just impossible to tell what it is without culturing it. And by the time you get the results back the bird is either dead or better. I normally use Tylan 50 injections at the 1st sign of respiratory problems. I like it because I saw 1st hand how well it *works. 1/2 cc per normal-big sized chicken and 1/4 cc per bantam for 6 days injected into their breast muscle (their left side). You could always use their leg muscle if you can't bear to do the breast muscle.

Mitzi, oredered the brinsea mini, the most basic they had, well they sent me the advance, which is a little more expensive, i called them and they knocked some off the price since it was their mistake, and i love the little thing- just pop em in there, add water every couple of days, and is a no-brainer...:)
I'm still really wanting one. I'm too scared to use my Little Giant again. Do you have something to measure your humidity? What's your hatch rate with yours? I've got my LF Faverolles boy separated with just his 3 LF Fav girls and would sure like to hatch eggs out without having to drive to Shawnee to take them to Carl. I need something idiot-proof.

My biggest concern is my other chickens. I am also concerned about the fact that I was going to bring my Serama to POOPS and maybe a hen that is beautiful, but I just don't like for some reason. I really want to find the Serama a good home. I don't mind nursing the little gal back to health but not if she has to be kept in solitary confinement for the rest of her life.

Can I ask what happened for you to be afraid to use it again? (BTW if you want to get rid of it I might take it off your hands for a hatcher)

Well, I may be out of the loop for the next week... Hubby may get to come home this weekend for one week before heading out to afghanistan where he will be for the next year...

I will be spending time with him, hopefully getting alot of stuff taken care of while he is here, before he is going to be gone for a long time.

Spring break is this next week, so glad he might get to come home during this time to spend time with Montana as well...

Talk to you guys later on next week!
