***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Thanks for the link. Interesting artical, but not 100% true. Here's part of it:

Though a popular myth, black panthers do not exist in the wild in North America. A black panther is a melanistic version of a large cat, usually an African leopard or a jaguar. These can sometimes be seen in zoos. Melanistic refers to the unusual black coloration produced by a hereditary, genetic mutation. There has never been a black mountain lion documented anywhere in their range.

I know for a fact that about 40 years ago, there were either Black panthers (or extra large Black mountain lions) that lived and would breed in the caves across the river from Sand Springs. Could have escaped from a traveling circus many years before that, who knows. But they WERE there.

I worked for the city then and knew of a man that would take all but one of the kittens from each litter, wean and domesticate them to sell as exotic pets. They were a beautiful black with long tails. He finally got killed by a mother cat, and we were told to keep quiet about it.

Yes kassaundra, and after working for the gov. for several years, I know they never ever stray from the truth.

As to whether they "stray from the truth" or not I can't say, but I know of no other source then the "horses mouth" since they report they haven't released any, and I haven't seen them actually releasing any, no one has done an expose' filming them releasing any (that I have found), guess I'll go with they haven't until proven otherwise. As a previous post noted the wide range of at least some of these cats there is distinct possibilty of release from some nearby state(s), but I didn't search for that information.

Been building pens today. These are about 5 1/2 feet long and at the bottom about 2 foot wide. They were made out of some old bread racks. My dad back in the early 60's worked at a Bills Backery in Clinton Ok. They replaced a bunch of bread racks and dad brought them home. I run across some of these the other day and picked thru them and got all the better ones. Dad used them in hog pens, goat pens etc thru the years and some were shot. Little bit of wire and some grates on the end and poof, I have pens. i have enough to make about 6 or 7 of these pens. The newspaper in Clinton sales aluminum sheets that has something to do with their printing for a dollar or two apiece. I plan on buying some of that to cover one end so the birds will have shade and be protected from rain. The sheet metal in this picture is ok, but I only found the one piece, and aluminum will be lighter. I am going to use them in the garden to pull down the rows so my young chickens can do weed and bug control.

now if you could make it so i could fold it up and put it in the car- i'd say makem and sell em at the get together in june and poops!

I have a question for all the marans breeders. I hatched out some chicks from eggs bought at an auction. On the carton it said they were black coppers and the eggs were a fairly dark color. What I need to know *can black copper chicks be all black? a few have white on the underside, one has white only on the wings and the rest are all black. Now that they are getting feathers the ones with the most white are getting the brown feathers in over the wings. Should I post pics? LOL

Shellie

White on their down feathers equals red on their adult feathers :)

TonyO, as many people as try to keep exotic and wild animals, only to find they become more difficult w/ age and size, or cost so much to feed. I'm sure there are more exotics released to "the wild" then we care to think about. Not to mention if the black cat is a genetic mutation as they believe, then what's to stop that genetic mutation from developing across an imaginary line in the sand border (N. America vs S. America). I find the "absolute" statements of "facts" most scientists make about things that are obviously an educated guess to be annoying.(they can't have seen EVERY wild cat in the US, or know for certainty what is happening 300 million light years away, etc....)

Awesome idea, perfect for in between the rows in a traditional garden.

I lost two chicks this week. They were acting tired the day before, but no other symptoms. I am still nursing the one with the upper respiratory thing. Her eyes are swollen shut so I'm feeding her and giving her water with medicine in it. Cleaning her eyes and nose at least three times a day. This little bugger better make it! LOL How long do y'all think these things last and how long will she be contagious? So far none of the other birds are showing the same symptoms, so I think we separated her early enough.

From everything I read if they have anything respitory you cull. They can be carriers of it even after they are "cured" from it. I couldn't take that risk so had to cull 2 of our pullets that came down with this. I felt bad doing it but I can't risk it in my flock and sure wouldn't want them to infect anyone else's flock. Sorry you are going through this with your birds as well. It is hard when you feel like you are doing your best and you still loose them.

Mitzi, oredered the brinsea mini, the most basic they had, well they sent me the advance, which is a little more expensive, i called them and they knocked some off the price since it was their mistake, and i love the little thing- just pop em in there, add water every couple of days, and is a no-brainer...:)
