***OKIES in the BYC III ***

On the auction BCM eggs I hatched out a feather legged brown EE. Bought the eggs @ Blanchard sale. Who ever is selling the eggs doesn't keep there hens separated from other Roos IMO. Not thrilled when you consider the price of deep dark BCM eggs.

Oh dear, I got these eggs from Blanchard. Well I guess I will wait and see what happens.

White on their down feathers equals red on their adult feathers :)

Thank you for the tip! I have so much to learn LOL.

Peaches, that must be so hard on your family.
Those of you who breed OEGB might know the answer to this, hopefully. If this chick came from a brown/red rooster and a Wheaton pullet (if I spelled that right)-would you think it was a male or female if it were yours? It's 10 days old. Is this to be expected from those 2 colors?

well, at first being it was digital, i had to ask someone how to work it, it is basically preset for humidity and temp, it automatically stops turning 2 days before hatch, it only holds 7 eggs, unless you want to buy the rack for smaller eggs- i am sold on it- if i can do it, anyone can- the next version down isnt digital, and you'd need to turn the eggs, but it holds ten eggs- they did have a special going, not sure if that is still on

on the tylan, there is a powder form, i have never used it, but that is an option too

need a head shot mitzi, with comb visible if you can.

He's only 10 days old, Jim. He doesn't have a comb. I got the best shot I could of it though. You can sort of see ridges. I was hoping you could tell by color like you can other wheatons.
Robin, that sounds like the incubator I need. I don't want or need more than 7 at a time.

I dont know if it is true or not, but i have heard the same thing from several differant folks so I have always figured the wildlife dept did this. You say you know they didnt, how do you know this? Sure not trying to start a CAT fight on here

But if you have proof please share, so those of us that dont know will be able to help clear this up when folks go to talking about this. Thanks

I know that because my brother has been an OK game warden for a verrrrryyyy long time. When wildlife is caught for relocation or released, the wardens are very much in the loop. I realize this is a touchy subject for many, but you have the extremes of "there are no long tail black cats in N.America, or there are no cougars established in OK."...etc. to the "we have to drive around a black panther that is laying in our driveway every morning when we go to work" You can see where it all becomes a heated discussion.

I think that's probably overkill considering wild birds constantly bring some sort of virus, bacteria or disease in literally every time they stop in your yard. The neighbor 4 miles down the road who bought some hens at a flea market or auction? Those same wild birds just visited them and dragged disease to your house. Plus it's springtime, wild birds along with their diseases are in full swing.

I've always felt that sort of thing was overblown. The more free ranging my birds are, the healthier they seem to be. In fact, I think that whole biosecurity thing is often over hyped. The only thing I tend to worry about is auction birds. And now I rarely buy anything that isn't fresh out of an egg, or I'm buying from a source I trust.

When something DOES get sick, it either makes it on its own or I cull it, if it looks like it won't make it and is just suffering. I never medicate. I don't want those genetics in my flock, and I certainly don't want to pass them on to somebody else.

But then, I see birds as work animals, here to produce food and improve the soil. If I did the pet or the show thing, though, I would probably feel differently. For instance, I do medicate my dogs and cats when they are sick.

keep an eye on the comb for the next week or so, the comb will show for a few days then seems like it goes away.

i think you have a pullet, but without putting my hands on it i cant be sure.

Well I sure am learning this chick stuff by the seat of my pants... The 10 girls are happy as can be in their new home, but the younger chick must have got chilled or something. It developed pasty butt and now after 24 hours of cleaning and watching, it is properly 'winking' again! Can't wait to see what it turns out to be.

Perfect! That means I only have 1 dog. Lost a couple last year, a border collie mix last summer and a pyrenees in December, to either the coyotes or the wild pig herd roaming around here, or both. We've seen both varmints running along the fenceline not 100 feet away. Our pyrenees was fearless and I'm sure he put up a helluva fight. They both disappeared at night while running the unwelcome critters off. Need to get a new herd dog!

Who knows if they have released any but I think their 'confimed sightings' page is certainly whitewashed. We used to caretake a 120 acre property 10 miles east of us that has a 5 acre deep pond with lots of beavers living in it. The place is mostly woods. About 5 years ago while walking the trails to the back end of the place hubby turned a corner and came across a mountain lion enjoying one of the beavers for dinner right in the middle of the path. Good thing she was busy, it allowed him to slowly back away and get outta there, since that day happened to be one that he didn't bring his gun with him. So, yes, they are alive and well in south Pottawatomie county.

Understand about the guvmint, cowboy... did some years working for the VA... now there's some serious whitewashing....

Yes it does call me in 6-8 weeks when we get rid of these pups! I have 5 males and 3 females to pick from, lol.
Would like to see pics too!
