***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Got the birds and rabbits fed and watered. Loaded up the stuff going to the auction. Goung to Horse Cave ,Ky sale today. I like it because stuff sells by the piece there rather than how many is in the box , times the money.
So far we have sunshine hope it stays and drys things out. Its sure getting pretty and green. Glad to see another winter is over even if it wasn't a bad one.

Even the warm weather stuff (toms, peppers, okra, cukes, squash etc..)?

I tried to start seeds this year I do have a few puny plants, but may need to go ahead and purchase the majority of my toms and pepper plants again this year. I hope to have my greenhouse built this year, do you heat yours? How early can you get stuff started in it in this area?

Lettuce, carrots radish, Turnip, Broccoli, Califlower and the like you can start very early, they are more frost tolerant and do better in cool weather.
Potatoes need to be in the ground the first or second week of march but you plant later just don't expect a good harvest.
Corn must be planted no later than April 10 if you want a harvest of that.
The other stuff we like to start inside get them up to 12-16 inches then transplant outside setting the plant deeper in the ground by burying about 4-6 inches of teh stem as well, that helps make them more drought tolerant.
Squash, you can start now.
Melons wait another week or two.

How many more shows does Madison have?

She has two shows & then the final where she won't show birds but have a test of sorts. She will have to judge (by placing) 3 classes of birds in 1st, 2nd & so on. Then a muiltiple choice on definitions out of the standard.

You just have to give me a heads up on when you want me to get them so I can be ready. I am fighting feather mites right now, another thing on my list today.

Kass if you are going by soil temps all warm weather crops can go in the ground now, but that doesn't mean we are in the clear for frost. I am putting tomatoes in the ground next wk. along with a few other things. But I have plenty of row cover to shield them with & I have plenty of replacement plants. If there is something you have plenty of seeds for I say go for it. Plant now! Temps are staying 20 degrees warmer than normal that is why so are already planting.

Two shows not bad.. I was trying to make sure I was ready for those rosecombs and that gives me a little more time, perfect.

On the feather mites, try a warm water rinse ( this will get alot of the mites and dirt off the birds), Then Bathe with a flea and tick shampoo with a egg inhibitor, follow that with a dip in either Permethrin or Malation. Once dry treat with Ivermectin, follow up in a few days with some adams or frontline spray under each wing, and near the vent.
Sounds like a lot of work but will rid you of them quickly. Of course dont forget to spray the pens with malation or permethrin.

If anyone is interested I have 8 chick feeders (the red fold up 18 inch long ones), 2 folding rabbit cages, 3 small cages with catch trays, one large cage we used at sales for teh big birds we had, several 1 gallon waterers and a few of the black rubber water or feed tubs. PM or call if you can use them, I no longer have a use for these items and do not want to spend 40 in gas to send them through a sale.

Well, I know what I saw, and it was unmistakable. It ran parallel to I 44 for about 50 yards before running down into a creek. At one point it stopped, turned around and looked right at us. We even had time to pull over, get out of the car and watch it.

I have no doubt you saw one. I believe the wildlife depts stand is that they aren't living and breeding in OK. The ones that they've been able to document have all been young males and the one female didn't show signs of reproduction. Personally, I think if they're moving through OK, surely some of them liked it well enough to stay. :)
