***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Okla, I've asked about you several times, I'm so glad to see you're alright. You've sure been busy though-wow.
Emily, I'm so sorry about your little blind boy. I know how much you cared about him.
Is the little Splash Araucana doing ok?

Okay...should never go into Shawnee Atwood's by yourself when there are baby chicks.... pullets and straight-run.
Somehow those 3 Lt Brahma pullets, 3 Silver Laced Wyandotte pullets and 4 Buff Orpington straight run just appeared in a box in my cart. I just had to pay for them.
Too funny!! That's how we ended up with ducks and bantams too!

Kass - yep, we discovered Atwoods was more expensive a while back too. And that their feed bags aren't the same size either.

jenshens - that's a bad situation. They kind of make my neighbors look better. They hate our chickens but at least they say so and don't just buy some to let their dog eat. Have you called animal control or would that just stir up trouble with them?

GOOD NEWS - we can have our goats we want.

This is as close to my happy dance as I can show you.

My neighbor came out and was looking all over for his chicken so I gave it back. Uuggghhh. I told him how heart breaking it was seeing her get attacked and I noticed the dog was still in her area so I saved her. I let him know I would be more than happy to keep her here and nurse her back but he said he'd get a cage and come get her. I think he was looking at it as I was taken on his burden and didn't want me to have to do it. I would GLADLY take this chicken. I don't need another but I don't want her to die! I asked him where his barred rock was and he said they killed it. Grrrr. So aggrivating! I wish I weren't outside when he was looking, but I couldn't ignore it and act like I didn't know where she was. He said he would try to control the dogs better.
I really felt for the guy believe it or not. I've seen him age so much the last few years. His mother in law died and the chickens were hers and his wife is sick as well and he's taken on a second job. He just looks so tired and worn. I understand his wife is sick and I don't expect her to run out after a chicken but she could have kept the dog in the house. If she would have asked me to help when I called I would have. I'm not sure what's wrong with her but I believe it's mainly depression. I don't know what to do the next time this happens, and I'm sure it will. He just put her back out in her coop, at least I got some medicine on her. I guess I should look at it as it's none of my business but when I'm sitting in my yard and can see and hear it happen it's really hard to ignore! The craziest thing about it all is they are really nice people! I think they are just burned out on, well...everything.

We broke down and started turning on the light in the coop again and egg production went back up. We had fallen off to 6 eggs a day or so from 14 birds and we're back up to 12 or 13 everyday. I still am selling more than we get to eat which I'm not sure whether to be happy about or not ... hmmm

, but I am really depressed over this. Almost to the point where I want to give up my chicken hobby.
Thank you for listening Okie friends, means alot.

Emily
i know that loss- and its not silly! they are so special each one of them and he had a happy life with you, remember that!
Way to go! Good for you! Thats what I would have done!!! I hope the chickie gets back to being healthy! And really hope the owners dont ask for their bird back ONLY for the birds sake!
Yep! exactly what i would do too, although keep her in isolation to make sure she won't pass anything on to yours once she gets over the shock of a good family- maybe hide her in the house awhile?

thanks for sharing! i have a trio of bantams and just love them!

Been busy today, finished up a foop and run for the cochin trio, is 4 x 12 big enough run for large cochins? they were really having fun digging around, it isn't fancy, but part of the bantam run, figured the bantams could share part of their run. Also, my little OEGB hen is laying softshelled eggs, i have had to pull them out- any ideas?
