***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Broody hens can be so unpredictable-- hope it works out LonnyandRinda.

Had a good time at Newcastle. Was nice to see a few folks hadn't seen in a while. Kids had a blast especially Lucas. His new chicks are all settled in & he hasn't stopped playing with them, poor chickens they may be loved to death!
I managed to get 2dz Speckled Sussex eggs & 5 golden lakenvelder chicks. There was loads of birds I am sure the sale is still going & we left 2 hours ago.

Two weeks to POOPS!!!!!

Oh Lordy lordy lordy ... I am sooooooooo tired.

Completely built the new 6 foot perimeter fence around the chicken yard today as well as finished two more sides of the new coop and half the roof AND poured another concrete foundation wall. My hands hurt, my feet hurt, my back hurts, my legs hurt, my shoulders hurt, my forearms hurt, and my bum hurts. The girls and boys aren't quite sure what to make of this new enclosure that they can't hop out of and wander through my garden at will. Of course in the middle of it all, our neighbor came over to tour our garden (and buy eggs). Lol. Great time to see what a mess we can make. At least our yard smells wonderful right now because our currant bushes are blooming profusely and smell like heaven. Then when they drop their flowers, our wisteria will be in bloom, and when that gets done blooming our honeysuckle will bloom. Maybe that's why no one ever knows we have chickens. hmmm.

Oh, and our asparagus finally came up!

Erin- we don't want to talk about aspargus. Either the storm took all my tips or a critter. I see green along the bases, but over 100 plants appear destroyed!

Oh that's horrible. I feel bad for you. I was beginning to wonder if last years drought and my chicken gang digging in my bed had killed mine off. Do you think they'll send up more shoots later on?

Can asparagus be grown in containers (large flower pots) or have to be in the ground?

The roots are pretty big, so I don't think a container would work.

We have hot wire up & our dogs running, so I doubt it is dear-- but anything is possible. I wondered if the hail storm could have done it, but who knows. There is still green bottoms, so the tops might come back if the damage isn't too bad.
Lucas is already up playing with his chicks, he is goin to be a cranky monster this afternoon!

i've had that happen here too, nibbled down to the soil level, then the plant comes back up and happens again, i finally have caged them in with harware cloth, maybe that will work, but its just a flower bed, not on a large scale
