***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Rinda....I know they are mixed and come in endless colors as adults. Didn't know you still had the RIR hen. Everyone posts chipmunk marked ones in the 'what breed is it thread' so havent seen the black EE chicks before. Looks like they will grow up to be cute. I like the dark bodied ones. Of course there is no such as thing as an ugly EE, right? LOL. I think the ones with black beards and reddish heads look really cool. I wonder what color of parents most likely causes this look. On yours that get beards, are they black beards?

I think I'll get an AM roo one day but can't decide on color.

That black hen I got from you is laying regularly now. She actually ate out of my mom's hand one day. I thought about giving some of her eggs to kyzmette to incubate just to see what they would look like b/c the birchen 'dotte roo has been covering her.

Kass - that NN I got from you, under foot all the time. They lay light brown egg, right? I'm starting to wonder if its actually her that started laying or the blue laced 'dotte pullet as it should be about time for her to be laying.


To everyone.....looks like there might be another swap in Talequah in October. Coral, are you involved in organizing that or is it all Todd?

I don't have the RIR anymore. These are from the last set of eggs I had from her before I sold her. I do have a young RIR pullet that I will do the same thing with in the spring. The pullet I posted is the only one I've raised to maturity so I don't know on the beard color, just that some people I've sold to said some of them did grow beards.

Glad the black Ameraucana is laying good now! I know some Ameraucana strains aren't particularly good layers, but mine seem to be.

Previous obligations will keep us from participating in the October swap in Tahlequah. We wish you all the best, and hopefully can participate again in the spring, summer and/or fall next year.

shelbydog, yes she should lay light brown. I interact w/ my chickens a lot, but don't pick them up or hold them much so they are pretty much people friendly, they are used to me coming out w/ treats, so it is hard to make it to the treat bowls w/o stepping on them.

Boys are moving hay today...should have cloe to 1000 round bales when they finish...whew!

Two heifers in the front lot are bagged and ready to calve...any day or up to two weeks...they are sooooo unpredictable....or perhaps that is predictable... lot

Sorting out cockerels today and making a fattening pen for those going to freezer camp. Then need to get a pen for some new birds I'm getting from DGibson. Looking forward to seeing some of his Buckeyes added to the flock. I love the Delaware Bantams I recently received from him. The little cockerel is so comical in nature( thinks he is a BIG bird) and the girls are really sweet birds.

And of course...chicks..A black Rosecomb broody with babies...she is still sitting on one egg that should hatch today or tomorrow.

I didn't know there were Bantam Delawares. I'm completely enamored with these 3 Delaware I got at the Newcastle auction last weekend. I still think i got them at way too low of a price at $18 for all 3. I've been reading about them and a most certainly want more. And knowing there's Bantams means I can get twice as many Does Don sell hatching eggs, do you know? Or does he raise the Delaware bantams? I adore these 3 girls I got, calm and their feathers feel so soft....talk about an under-appreciated breed....

The Ara rooster I got from you is definitely a people lover! And it doesn't bother him a bit to be picked up and kissed, doesn't hurt *his pride any That's one of my favorite pens to give treats to, because I just have to sit there and he comes up time and again and gets the food and drops it in front of one of the girls and comes back for more. He's so proud to be feeding them. I've never even seen him eat anything himself ever, he gives every bite to the girls. I LOVE this boy, Kass.

Hello all! I've got a problem, so I have come to the experts! My 5yo granddaughter has been bugging me to get some chicks, so when one of the hens went broody, I thought it would be great fun and a great learning opportunity for us to hatch some chicks ourselves. I found some eggs not too far away that were from some pretty good chickens, waited for the weekend so that she could be around when they hatched, we made her a spot in the corner and boxed it off, and put her eggs under her. That was a week ago Saturday... tonight I went out to lock the chickens up and there she was, in one of the next boxes and NOT on her eggs. Apparently she'd flown out and didn't bother to fly back in. I felt the eggs, and I'm sure they're ruined.

I'm torn about what to do. The hen was broody for nearly a week before we put the eggs under her, that means she's been broody for 2wks already. IF I got more eggs, would she stay on them until they hatch? I know I would definitely have to come up with a way to keep her from returning to the laying nests. I was afraid she'd do that when we started this, but I thought by paneling off a corn for her, she'd stay put. Guess she won't without a top!

My next idea was trying to find some new chicks to put under the hen the day she's supposed to hatch. Anyone tried this? Would the hen accept them IF I could even find some?

Anyone have any thoughts or other ideas?

Sometimes they will, sometimes they won't. I guess it depends on the timing. I've had that happen. Eggs out of the nest and be cold for over a day. I put them back under the hen and they still hatched. Although they were a day late for the hatch, they did hatch.

Big Man came out of the egg loving people. Jaxom (his littermate) was always skeptical (still is) of people even bearing treats, but Big Man always wanted to perch on some body part while getting his treats or coming over and saying hi.

Then I must have a swarm of people loving birdies!

I let every pen out to free range right now...about 100 birds. They flood out of the gates to different parts of the yard and barn area. That's when I refill all the feeders and change the water. Several will come around for scratches on their neck and squat for petting.
But...
anytime after that...especially in early evening when I come out the back door, there is a huge run for Momma! And they follow me to the barn to see if I will get out the scratch or the rolled oats. If I am carrying a bucket of scraps from the kitchen, it is game on to try to see who can get in front of me to stop my forward motion and snatch the choicest morsels..
The routine for penning up at night is a handful of treat grain in each pen and they run to their respective pens to get it....makes cooping at night so much easier. A recheck on food and water is time for enjoying their antics and cooing.
I so enjoy my birds.
