***OKIES in the BYC III ***

My blue cochin roo is 10 weeks old and has bald spots on his back. He had chick fuzz on his back by his tail head but now it is gone. I had him in a seperate cage because I was worried the other chicks were picking on him but I didn't see any blood or injuries. Is this normal? I can dust him with poultry dust again ( I dusted everyone a out a month ago just as a precaution).
Quite normal for the Cochin cockerels. Several of mine get their height before they get their backs feathered.
ETA: didn't find my camera charger yet but snapped a pic with my phone! Momma and 19 babies!
Such an adorable photo

@Kyzmette I think Dusti hit the nail on the head. I have been having the same problem here- Cocci symptoms in the brooder but Corrid is doing very little I just switched to Sulmet 2 days ago I've lost two more but the rest are looking better. My discovery was by accident (I was out of Corrid and the Sulmet I asked about happened to come in when I went in for more) but I think that's why it is working!
Mine was a little backwards from that. My babies didn't get cocci until they got outside, which really threw me for a loop. I kept thinking they had some weird, exotic disease, and it never occurred to me that the older birds might have had it. So I kept treating the babies and they were getting worse and worse and I was just feeling HELPLESS! It wouldn't surprise me at all if some of the chicks being hatched nowadays were carrying the Corid-resistant bacteria more frequently, since Corid is given at the drop of a hat and half the nation's chicken people use medicated chick feed.
That's what happened here...I moved the 3 - 6 week olds to the brooder room from the big brooder box. Within a week, I was losing a few. Then realized it was cocci and the Corid I started them on was not working. I switched to Sulmet, but still lost 15. The rest have recovered.
I need lots of good thoughts/ prayers please. I am interviewing for a teaching position that I really really want tommorrow and I have another interview on Wednesday. I really really want the one tommorrow.
Will be sending T&P your way!
@hotcurltr , how do you feel about the birchen color pattern

Kass, who's birds are those? That's one of my most favorite color patterns.[/quote] Kass, I know hotcurltr likes the Birchen ...because she liked my Birchen Wyandotte project birds.

No pinks but their Blue eggs are *huge! The one never laid any pullet eggs, she started right in laying whopper sized eggs. I'll be very glad to get the last of some of Jack's. I'm very excited and I hope he's got enough for me!

Now that has me terribly jealous! If he just happens to have too many for you, let me know!

Too many Ameraucanas?? Is that even possible? I've got all these Blue Bantam Ameraucanas also. Actually there's a few Splash and a few Black also. But the only ones anyone ever wants is the girls. I bet it's going to suck caponizing Bantams :/

Thanks Nanak. well then that settles it. I have been eyeing him for a while thinking how pretty he is going to be.

Do you have any bantam Ameraucana girls to bring to poops?? I know. You just said everyone only wants girls. Sorry :( I would like a blue egg layer but only have bantams.

I don't know their sexes yet. I have a pretty good idea based on their combs but some of the "girls" will turn into boys later :)

They are blue and white. I don't know much about genetics either, but if they want to hatch eggs I may let them, being that I got them to incubate eggs from my standard size chickens. The 2 that are laying have gone broody for me already, but I think it may have been too cold (there was still snow on the ground) and they would leave the nest every morning to eat and drink so I didn't get any babies from 'em. Doesn't really matter much what color they turn out as long as their healthy... i like surprises! I might actually look into getting some eggs from a color that might go well with him after I do a little research on genetics (eek punnett squares and genetics are so scary lol)
