NanaKat - question regarding the way you sterilize jar lids - Do you boil the water in the microwave and then put the jar lids in the boiled water for 5 minutes or are you able to put the metal jar lids in the microwave as long as they are submersed in the water? My only experience with anything metal in the microwave was a small fire, but it wasn't submersed in water.

Good Morning ya all! It's been a long time since I've posted...a little over a year, just got back home this week after an overseas military deployment.

I've got the chicken/poultry jitters in a bad way...lol....are there any auctions or anything this weekend to help my chicken fix? My DW, Kwartel, has done a great job on our flocks here at home...but always have room for something more. Still looking for adult peahens....

We about thought we could breathe again, when we had another raccoon attack. We can't even find where they got in, but they got four really nice silkies, including the gorgeous gray hen and my best young self blue (lavender) rooster. We're just sick. Still had the traps baited, but no takers there.

We moved the last five silkies in that particular complex of pens and will beef up the three pens on the end that are almost stand alone. They are the newest of that group and better built to begin with. All the pens are built on buried cement blocks and have stuco reinforcement (metal lath) 28 inches up from the ground all around, as well as on the doors, and some buried.

Guess we'll be continuing to set traps for awhile and will go back to sardines for bait.

if you have one that is real hard to catch, go get 4 small square bales of straw, place one to the back of the trap, one on each side and one over the top setting on the other bales, It will look like a small hidey hole rather than a trap, use the sardines, if you or something else happens to scare the varmit it will run into the trap, it also cannot get the bait without going in. This works well on stubborn smart critters.

Thanks. Will see if we can find some small bales of hay--it's scarce around here. Not sure if it is smart, hard to trap critters or just sheer numbers. One of my chicken friend neighbors about 5 miles away has caught 11 raccoons and at least 5 opossums recently. They've completely wiped out his breeding guineas and most of his chickens. Our young dogs are apparently not enough deterrent. Lost our older dog to cancer about 6 months ago. She must have been doing a better job than we knew.
