Thanks for taking care of this pup, and I'm sure he will be happy in his new home!

My teens are more adventurous than the oder hens. They will go completely around the barn and out by the big equipment looking for grasshoppers but will come running and flying when called.
The older hens stay in the shade of the west side of the barn and will go across the driveway but really stay close to me. If I walk down the drive, they will follow but only because they think I'll scatter some grain or treats for them...silly birds...they look forward to the oats when they go back into the run.

The boys decided to Ivomec all the cattle today...have to by Sept 1 in order to avoid the larva of the heel fly in the cattle...so I'm having to hold off on ranging the chickens til they go to the leases. Right now the home herd is in the lot and around the barn eatting what grass is there and getting their dose of pour on ivomec. The young calves are balking at chicken pens...some have not been this close to the birds. We have one week old calf that jumps in the air and flips around like a bucking bull everytime the rooster crows.

BIL brought a bucket of okra..so I'll pickle some more today.

Pickled okra? I have never heard of this. Does it take a pressure canner? All I have is a water bath canner.

Not at all.
You boil the vinegar to pour over the okra in the jar and seal. In each sterilized quart jar you will need:
2 cloves of garlic
1 tsp of dill seed
one quarter of a small onion or 1 tsp powdered onion
1 tsp pickle spice
one hot chili pepper
2 tsp of non-iodine salt/canning salt (salt with iodine makes the okra mushy)

Stuff with small okra that has had the stem end trimmed. Leave about 1 inch from the top clear.

In a sauce pan boil for 5 minutes
4 cups of cider vinegar
1 cup white vinegar
1 cup of water

I sterilize the jar lids in a glass bowl of water in the microwave for 5 minutes while the vinegar boils.

Pour in enough vinegar to cover the okra to within 1/2 inch of the top of the jar. Wipe the rim and seal with a steril lid.

Let the jars cool. The lids should pop down as the jars cool. If the jar doesn't seal put in the fridge or pour off the vinegar and reheat it and then pour it back in the jar and recap the jar.

NanaKat,

Thanks for that recipe! Sounds simple and I can eat my weight in pickled okra!

LOL! I didn't plant any okra this year, but will save this recipe for next year.

All my birds made it through the night with no new symptoms. I'll dose them again, tomorrow, with more LA-200. Thanks again for all the help.
