***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I use hydrated lime in my pens. However, I've read that if their feet are wet and they walk in the lime it can burn them. I used it in one coop with a wood floor, and the hen that stayed mostly in that house ended up with foot problems--I think possibly from the lime. In the places with dirt floors, it helps a lot, mixing with all the stuff, including chips, on the floor to break everything down. I've had no problems where it is dry.

Yes it will burn or irritate when wet. i hear that straw is pretty good to put in the pen. We put wood ships down last year and I think it held too much moisture because it kind smelled musty sometimes.

Yes, it is only for bantams, including silkies. There will be a sales room also; don't know if there will be large fowl there. I hope to see some of you there!

hope you finds some pol girls soon for your single girl. Surely someone near Tulsa will know of someone with some 6 - 10 month old girls for you.

The war is on with this rat...so far it's rat 1: NanaKat 0. Darn critter tripped the trap and got the peanut butter...all I got was some fur.

. I was surprised it came back after me running the vaccum cleaner hose for several hours in there. At least it had not chewed thru the jacuzzi wires I could see with a flashlight and a mirror. Haven't turned it on yet to see if there is any damage...have no idea what may be tucked back in around the tub where I can't see. I don't want to use poisons under the tub area because I don't want it dying back in there. May end up taking out the water pipe access if I don't catch him soon. But in old houses, that means pulling out the bottom two shelves of the laundry closet and un screwing the plywood cover.

Lost Mr. Green Genes in pen # 10 yesterday. He was the 2nd of two Birchen Wyandotte project roosters I had saved. I had removed a hen that was hen-pecking him last week before the freezing rain. He seemed a little stressed out by her so I boosted the feed in that pen to include conditioner and added AVC to the water. He was looking more like a rooster with the other girls before the rain. But found him in the coop yesterday morning. We do have a few eggs from him collected so hopefully will get a few nice chicks from him.

Setting up Project pen # 11 today. White Bubba (F1 Blue Cochin/Blue Wyandotte Birchen) will cover 1 of the Birchen hens (F1) , 2 Blue Cochin/Wyandotte (F1) hens, 1 Blue Cochin hen, 1 Blue Columbian Wyandotte hen (F1) and 1 Black Wyandotte hen (F1). Besides the expected offspring, wouldn't a nice single comb Blue Columbian feather footed bird be nice ...Blue Columbian Cochin. Might take a few generations.....

We had a calf born this morning and she kept it in the low spot where she had it and that spot turned into wet mud. We pulled it up on higher ground for mom to finish cleaning it and within minutes, the calf was standing. We will go back to check to see that the calf has sucked, but she is an experienced mother and there really should be no problems.

Might try working in the garden this afternoon. I have onions to set and some of the cabbage and brocolli could go out.

Also need to put one of the Purple Martin poles up with the gourds. They usually begin arriving about this time.

Hope everyone has a great day and upcoming weekend.

I can't even imagine trying to garden in this cold. You are such a motivation to slackers like me.

Can anyone tell me if they sell at the crozier auction? Or are all the animals only up for auction? Sorry if that's a silly question, lol

Pics of what I have been doing in the garden/yard this last month or two.

The bed along the house is bulbs and drought loving perinial/herb/flowers. The far side of the fence line I still need to weed and mulch it is comfrey, this side of the fence is forsythia and strawberries.

The fence line along the lt side is the same forsythia/strawberry bed as the first pic. The back area is raspberries, strawberries, garlic, and will be fig trees.

Long view of the raspberries/strawberries/garlic/figs. Each fence spur is 10 feet, and each space between the spur is 10 feet. This area is very shaded so hoping the berries will like it there.

And speaking of strawberries here is one of the little darlings. lol

80 feet line of fence weeded and mulched 2 feet wide on each side of the fence. Eventually will be highbush blueberries on the east side, forsythia on west side w/ strawberries at the base and garlic. Some forsythia is already planted the rest will be this fall/winter, blueberries will have to wait until I can afford them. This year I am going to plant the whole thing in peanuts, for mass amount of cheap seeds and good high protien fodder for either chickens or if I am able to get the bunny houses finished then the bunnies.
The 4 foot wide bed by the house goes all the way around to the front and then you already saw the other side. This side will be planted in shade loving herbs and mint (maybe if I get enough mint the ants won't come in

) and bulbs (flowers) around front bulbs, blueberries (mostly low bush) and flowers.
