***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Update for our Labor Day Chicken Gathering: We will have beanbag toss games for the kids. Do I need to paint numbers next to the openings on the beanbag board? I think I do. I'm working on the boards this weekend. We will also have a few boards with cutouts for faces so people can take an event day photograph. I've only finished the sky on the first face board. I'll post a photo tomorrow when I get the heads, ears, necks, etc. painted.

Very cute Coral! You are very talented!

I have discovered what I think are mice living under the storage shed by the chicken coop & run. I know I won't be able to keep them out, so I am looking for suggestions.

My dad has bait in the garage, which has a door that opens to the porch in the backyard, but he is so (frustratingly) stubborn, and will not take it up. I can't seem to reason with him. I have had a dog die from rat poison before. It seems my point - that if a chicken kills/eats a mouse that has eaten poison, it/we could also get sick or die - will not be made clear enough until it actually happens.

He believes if a mouse gets in the garage long enough to eat the poison, it will die before it can get out. I don't really know how fast it works on mice, but I'm pretty sure 20ft is close enough, and that mice can get through REALLY small openings even without the doors being open.

I mean, am I right to be worried?

Most mouse and rat poisons are anti-coagulants and cause the rodent to dehydrate and bleed to death and just depends how much is in the rodent when the chickens get ahold of it, Chickens being so much larger than a mouse I assume it would take more poison to kill them but then again it is poison so to me any is too much, at work they put out a green block and the mouse droppings are green from it for a while before it dies, so it doesn't kill fast is my guess or at least not fast enough, I don't use or recommend chemicals personally but I have several animals out all the time and I wouldn't want an accident,

Totally agree!

We did it guys!!!! The first meeting of the Rogers County 4H Poultry Club is at 7PM on Thursday 8/14/2013! Feel free to bring your children who show an interest in the poultry world that are ages 5 and up to 18! It will be at the 4H building in Claremore, OK across from the El Azteca on HWY 20 near the Expo Center.

Your kids will learn the breed recognition and traits, some minor genetics, how to feed, water, build pens/coops. Biosecurity, prepping for shoe and for the older kids with written permission from parents, how to process birds in a humane manner for consumption. Kids will be welcome to share information they have learned about their birds since the last meeting and do presentations. This will be a learning experience for myself as well however if you are interested in learning or would like your child to gain some valuable information, please let me know. I'm hoping to meet on Thursdays around 7PM according to the 4H guidelines. FFA members are welcome.
