Hey Robin-how are the new Seramas settling in?! Have you introduced Ebony to her new boy yet? This hen I ended up keeping here (because the male was making her scream) is a very dominant hen with other girls. I was hoping she'd get along with another of the girls and go in with that pair but she may have to be kept by herself. I don't seem to have any other Serama boys as gentle with girls as Channing is (so far). Have you ever had the problem of Seramas being too rough on the girls?
Boaz was that way with his girls, i tried him with OEG and that worked, but the darn girl kept going broody, so he is now with the bantam favarolle Mary- perfect match, he can't hurt her, and he gives her treats so she is happy.
haven't introduced Jojo to her yet, want to give him some settling in time, the cages are wonderful! The two pairs finally relaxed and the one boys comb is back to the normal color- i may put the younger roo with Honey, she may settle him down, spent some time holding him tonite, he is pretty people shy
on your little hen, you might try to pal her up with another hen to help her adjust, then introduce them to a roo
It looks exactly like cherry eye in dogs when I was looking at it. It seems I remember reading something somewhere about eyeworms.....does that sound familiar to anyone? You can see where his eye is cloudy in the middle, too. No sure if it was because of the lump on his eyelid? Or if some sort of injury might've caused the lump.
thanks- don't have valbazen, need to order some, have read vetrx in the eye 3 x's a day- do have thatMe, again.
Robin, here's a thread on eye worms in chickens....treatment included. Interesting stuff!

LOL! I have one of those "Ameraucana" birds! She was one of the original we started out with. She's pretty much a bearded pigeon. Lol! But she lays a pretty blue egg and gives me the cutest looks so I love her anyways.@Ksane the quotes around "Ameraucana" are because if I hear "Ameraucana" from anybody but a show breeder, I automatically assume "Easter Egger, possibly removed from Ameraucana parents so far it might resemble a pigeon".
Where do you get the little bitty zip ties? I need to find some... well, don't have to but would be nifty to keep around.
I know how you feel. If I don't pick up the chicken and really look it over I end up with something like a hen with really bad respiratory issues and bald but (even thought I am glad we got her.) and a "pair of pullet" silkies that are more likely boys. I truly believe the largest Silkie is a boy because of the comb. I'm going to hang on to the littler one until I can find out. But yah, they were listed and sold as a pair of pullets. And the guy said "OH, but its hard to find out the sex at this age". Bologna!!! THIS DUDE HAS A BIG COMB! But the nice side of me is just, oh well. I'll sell him and get a pullet later. So he's for sale.Oh, and want to give you guys a heads up, because I'm a mite peeved. I bought a bunch of "Ameraucana" chicks from the Coweta auction for a friend and every single one turned out to be boys. Now, while there's a sweet and kind part of me that wants to believe that was just bad luck, there's another part of me that thinks it's more likely that they got ventsexed before the auction.
Do you just feed it consistently or mix it with other feed? If I can find a feed with denegard then I would rather get it than try to add the med in water... Thanks for the tip! I will try the feed store here in my town. Hope they have it! I know someone who actually will feed his entire flock once a month "just incase". Would this be beneficial or would it make them build up a resistance to the medication? Anyone know?Based on the feed store and feed brand, the medicated feed runs between 18 and 58 a 50lb. I have used the less expensive and it all works well for its purposes. I raise my birds after 10 weeks on pig feed and use the Linder Milling Scud missile line of feeds. They run on average 28 a bag but worth every penny to me.
When fed consistently for 10-14 days the respiratory issues clear and leave without return and much easier for me to manage than water based antibiotics.
That sounds like fun! I took my daughters to the bantam show in Pryor and thought I could find a Silkie pullet for my oldest. All the silkies available were sold so I found out you have to get there early. For all interested or think they might be interested, there is a new poultry club that formed and is putting on a show April 5th in Norman at the Cleveland county fair barns. I am in the middle of cooking lunch so will follow up with contact information shortly.
Yes, discharge from the eye will usually be bubbly. Not so much from the nose. And she still makes a mucus sounding cough. I wont name names or say anything but someone I know in Oklahoma has just had an outbreak of a deadly respiratory disease in their flock (ILT). Killed one bird that I know of but they all might end up being ordered to be destroyed by the state. So so so sad. But since that is here in Oklahoma and I wont say how far from my own town, I will say that it makes me aware that it is out there and could have been transferred from another flock. So with my cochin having symptoms as this disease it makes me very careful on quarantine. I know it could not be ILT so I'm not going to jump to conclusions I just want you all to know that it is out there in this state and this person doesn't know how the flock got it seeing they never bring any other chickens in. This person thinks that maybe it was on their clothes or could have been from a feed sack. It's really a bad ordeal for this person and I feel SO bad for what they are having to deal with. My prayers go out to them.Any discharge from eyes or nostrils?
If no, it might just be stress causing the breathing abnormality.
Thanks Robin! I think I might try the pig feed if it's already available and easier to get them to ingest. I will keep these links available and bookmarked on my computer though. Goodness! All the bookmarks I have on here is ridiculous! HAHA! ALL of them are chicken related!!!!Denaguard or Gallimycin, denaguard taste really bad so you need to add sugar to the water- Gallimycin is really good too, have heard alot about it- here are a couple links- these guys are super fast shipping

Thank you for the info! I didn't know I was to follow up on the deworming medication! Going to get right on it as soon as I can remember the exact day I did it on... going back on messages on the BYC because I think I posted it...For those experiencing trouble with respiratory distress (in the birds), you might consider getting a bag of medicated pig starter. This is a small pellet, and is medicated very well to prevent respiratory problems in piglets. You can get this feed in several forms and medications, chlortetracycline, Tylan (Tylosin), Gallymiacin, Denegard and others. I have used this and find it very easy to keep them on the feed for two weeks this will also boost the other birds nearby to prevent them from getting the problems as well.
You can also use the pig feed with, fenbatazole, wormer in it for the birds, that will get all worms including tape worms. Just remember when worming you have to follow up and worm them again in 7-10 days. For best results hit them three times.
I bought a cylinder of cable ties at Tractor Supply. There are 650 in the container, and the majority are small, colored ties: green, white, yellow, red, and blue. I marked the Saipan chicks because they are in with some Delaware chicks, which share the same coloring until about four weeks. The other chicks in that brooder are RIR, so they didn't need to be marked.Where do you get the little bitty zip ties? I need to find some... well, don't have to but would be nifty to keep around.
