***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Feeding chickens was an adventure this morning. Some of us enjoyed it more than others :/ Click the photo for a larger view.
rofl!! Someone woke up on the wrong side of her tiny bed today lol! Oh, how funny :-D Lori, yes, they're big and yes, they're hard to find. Rinda, yours are beautiful :-O I truly want some so so bad after May. Is Newcastle this weekend? I've got Malay eggs set already in a staggered hatch that's going to last like 8 days. I still can't bear to let any go to waste though. I'll have 4-5 eggs by Saturday-does anyone want them?

Work was brutal yesterday, so I needed therapy, so I will share my therapy w/ you guys.

I feel like I am missing a golden opportunity:(
I emailed a lady on CL in Seminole who is willing to give me Blue Splash Langshan eggs to hatch but my husband is worried about how big they get and I am just starting with Bantam breeds. I feel terrible and aren't they a rare breed? Feeling sad

My girls are very calm. While I didn't receive them as pets, they're to the point now where they'll eat out of my hand. They still don't want me to pick them up, but they'll get right up around my feet without a problem. And even though they have the size to easily rule the yard, they've never challenged for dominance in the flock.

X2 mine are gentle timid giants. Not what you would expect from their size!

updated pic on Sonny and the girls in the tractor, the girls went upstairs to roost and poor Sonny was frantic looking for them, so picked him up and put him in the side - poor guy... he is so darn big!

Can't you make a bigger door for Sonny. I'm glad the girls are settling in, I was worried since they were used to free ranging during the day. I don't want all the eggs. U need some cochin/orpington crossess too. They should still be fertile from Dwight so u could stick their eggs in a bator and get pure breds. Dwight isn't a hatchery rooster. He's actually a buff english bred show bred whatever, with lines I know nothing about but have them.

Just got home from the Coweta Auction- no I didn't stay to the end LOL it will probably run until 2-3 AM. They weren't even done with eggs yet at 9:10 PM.... there were A LOT of birds there!!!! But little ones needed to get to bed- and my pocketbook couldn't take any more after the eggs! I neglected to bribe someone to hold my hubby's hand down....

But I did bring him home with me when the eggs were done this time!

I saw Dusti, Coral, and Kelly sitting in the center across the room. Kelly, my Hannah was so cute as we were leaving, "Wait I have to say goodbye to my new friend!" and off she ran. She and your granddaughter hit it off pretty well, they played rock paper scissors, thumb war, and some clapping song game that I didn't know. And I visited for just a brief minute with MJ before I had to bow out with my sleepy kids.

Off to set my 50 million eggs... not really but it feels like it....
Exciting. What kind of eggs did u get?

I stayed until the end of the auction because there were some birds I thought I "might" want, and I needed to wait for my cage to be emptied. Got a neat little cage for two dollars. It needs a few spots straightened, and maybe a little bit of paint, but when that's done I'll have a presentable and usable little cage.

I brought home eight American Bresse juveniles, over fourteen Basque hen juveniles, and some EE juveniles. Oh yeah, and six Basque eggs. I'm envisioning and amazing cross between NN and Breese. The Basque are just too beautiful to pass up. I don't know that many people at the auction saw them, or maybe they didn't know what they were seeing. I'll post some pictures later.

One of the Bresse has cocci symptoms. All the birds I brought home are in isolation and have begun a five-day regimen of Corrid. The one sick cockerel is all by himself. He's not happy. I'll put some toys in with him today.

I think it was five when I got home. DH staggered out into the kitchen to confirm that we didn't have a burglar emptying the dish washer.

He was back in bed, asleep, before I had the last dish in place.
Where do u get your energy? I was reading earlier about Bresse and how popular they are in France. They are supposed to be the best tasting chicken ever.

Well, just lost my BR, Barbara, dang, i knew it was coming, as her comb was hinting getting darker and darker- sigh.. i hate losing them

Sorry about Barbara. I thought maybe she was getting better, because she got out of the tub and came up and started tallking to me. I always thought when their combs and wattles were bright red that they were healthy?

Is't this one of the cutest faces....One of my silkies that my friend Jeansrie hatched out for me...just adorable.

Cute, cute, cute. As I've said before, I love babies

February and March are typically the two largest ones. My hubby got home around 5 AM from this one. They announced that they are trying to swing a change to starting Saturday at 3 PM because of how large the auction is becoming. Boo for losing a Saturday, but yay for no more waiting until 4:30 AM to be done with the auction! They said to watch their FB page, Crozier Auctions, and they will announce the change there if it materializes.
I thought I read that he came home with u . Or was I reading someone elses?

@Nanakat I want to be you when I grow up.
x2

What are the best breeds for laying hens for Central OK? I'd really like some that lay in the winter some too. What about roosters? Is there a particular breed that does better in Central OK?
It looks like you already have gotten several answers. I have an electic flock of chickens. All mine layed clear through winter and even on the coldest days. Light Brahma. Cinnamon Queens, RIR,Black Sex Link, Americaunas, some game hens, Production reds, Buff orpingtons. Dominiques some mixed breeds and I think that's it. Hope I'm not forgetting any. oH, aUSTROLORPE i', SURE I'M FORGETTING. MORE/

Yeah, my check book cringed when I closed my ticket.

Oh, I forgot, I got a butterscotch call drake too.
But look at all the fun you had. Have u picked up your javas yet? I need to let Angela know I have an extra roo instead of a pullet. One of mine is sickly, I have been tying to ave her, but she looks and acts premature. Hubby makes me so mad. He said just let them weed themselves out and I'll end up with the strongest. Well, premature humans grow up ok. He has been helping me treat her, grudgingly. If you decide you don't want the SS, I'll buy them from u.

I've put a lot of thought into this and I'm unfortunately going to have to let Floyd go. I just hate it. Hes SUCH a good roo for the girls, but he's not going to tolerate any other roos in the yard, and eventually I'm going to have to add Einstein, the Cream Legbar to the mix, along with Orlando, the SFH and Lord Dingwald, the Dorking.

Anybody interested in an EE roo who is gentle and good to the girls and isn't human-aggressive at all? If not, he'll have to go to freezer camp.
Me,me,me,me. Hubby has been bugging me to get one. I just thought I'd use my cochin/dotte cross roos for them, but he wants an Americauna.
KAS-- hope you're girl is doing ok. I want to get some silkie hens so I can breed to a NN and get some showgirls. I thinks they are adorable. And yes Kyz, I think her buzzars are beautiful. Now I want some. You all have turned me into a chicken addict. The Dr. said get a nice stress free hobby so I wouldn't have as many flare ups with this AutId, little did he know i'm in more stress always worrying. Ha ha. HUBBY SAID THIS DOZEN HENS AND A ROO HAS TURNED INTO A NIGHTMARE FOR HIM. lol

@hotcurltr I'll get a pic of Floyd to post before you decide. I bought him on auction even knowing I didn't need him because he was so darned pretty (hence the name... Pretty Boy Floyd). He's gentle to the girls and I even trust him with Bumpers, in spite of her previously broken hip. He's not pure Ameraucana that I know of, but he's a darned fine EE. Although you should also know that every time the auctioneer says "Ameraucana" I immediately think "EE". The auctioneer could say "This lot of Ameraucana is so purebred their ancestors met the Mayflower at Plymouth Rock" and I'd think "Wow, they had EEs back then?" ;)

LOL @hotcurltr do you REALLY want to know???

Got everything sorted and counted and started in the incubator today. Hubby went a little overboard on the bidding but we did have a completely empty sportsman to fill... only two eggs had slight cracks and I sealed them with beeswax so we'll see how they do.

6 standard cornish + 3 wheaten marans (from @Poco Pollo )
12 Jubilee Orp (will probably keep most of these for a 2nd bloodline)
12 Rhodebar
12 Gold-laced Orp (some of these were marked GLW I'm hoping they were mismarked...but may end up being Wyandottes instead of Orps)
12 Blue/Black Orp
18 BLR Wyandotte
6 Gold-laced Wyandotte
18 Exhibition quality RIR
12 Deep Keel exhibition quality Rouen ducks
7 paint silkie
1 partridge silkie
2 porcelain/buff/blue silkie (not sure what that marking means exactly, I guess a mixed pen)
12 spangled OEGB
14 white silkie
12 black silkie
12 blue silkie
7 blue/black cochin
10 black cochin
6 SFH (will be keeping these for sure)
6 Russian Orloff (will be keeping these for 2nd bloodline I have another set of hatching eggs due to arrive Monday)
12 RIR X Cochin frizzle
18 RIR crosses (I forget the exact mix- almost ate these but hubby insisted they go in the bator...)

Like I said no counting until I do the first candling, right?!?! Haha or not. Totally filled the one sportsman and had 20 eggs left that I slipped into the almost full sportsman... SO if you want any of these chicks they will mostly be fore sale in 3 weeks LOL!!!
