It is hailing in Meeker as I type...hoping for small short burst and little damage to my onions and cabbage! Found the neighbor's newborn calf this morning...appeared to have been chewed up...so coyotes. We couldn't tell if it was stillborn or an attack. Cow was back eatting with the herd.
Glad you checked and she has eggs. Mark each egg with a permanent marker so that you can tell new eggs from brooding eggs. She will have many roommates while she broods.I've got my first broody! She's been on this nest for 3 days now. But I don't know what's under her. LOL. She's not very fierce but I didn't want to push her buttons.![]()
X 2Sooooooooo cute! This lil Bantam hatched her first clutch of 5 on April 01, 2014. Nine days later she brought them out of the Hutch. For safety, that night I caught them, and her, and put locked them in the Hutch. Next night I was all set to do the routine again, but to my amazement this is what took place. Who says chickens are dumb.![]()
One pen is all you need. A Blue cock over Blue, Black and Splash hens will give you all the colors. I used Big Blue last year over a Blue, a Blue Splash, and a Splash hen and got Blue, Black, Blue Splash and white Splash with blue markings.I was really shocked to see so many blues because, (if I remember right), with the Andalusian Blue gene: breeding Blue to Blue produces 50%Blue, 25% Black and 25% Splash. Breeding Blue to Black prodices 50% Blue and 50% Black. Breeding Blue to Splash produces 50% Blue and 50% Splash. Breeding Splash to Splash produces all Splash but they gat paler and paler as generations go on and need Blue periodically added back in to keep the pretty Blue "spots". Lavenders or Self-Blues, are produced by the Lavender gene and it breeds only one shade of solid lavender grey and the chicks have a very different down color than blues. They have a light blue grey with a lot of yellow, especially on their undersides. Self-Blue is what Lavenders will be called in the SOP. - that is the extent of my color gene knowledge. I would like to learn more. It can get very complex with some colors though and it intimidates me. I love Blue colored birds but I am breeding Lavender bantam Cochins because I can't imagine how many pens I would need for Blue/Black/Splash Cochins.
