***OKIES in the BYC III ***

So Im google image searching chicken runs, just cause its almost midnight and I should be sleeping:rolleyes:  But I swear all I'm finding are these beautiful lush gardens with chickens lightly grazing through them. Whats up??? My girls have free range over their compost piles and we bring in LOTS of organic veggies and fruits (my husband has the grocery store hook up) but theres no grass except what we pull or grow for them (wheatgrass) They have shade from trees and there are some sunflowers that got taller faster than them, but no pretty grass for them to run on. :(  Am I doing something wrong? According to space calculations I have more than enough room for them all. Also any evergreen recommendations for my silkie run?  We have 2 fruit trees back there, and might just do another one, but was thinking an evergreen bush might be nice. Of course Im planning to plant something big enough that it has a chance to survive.

Haha! Those pictures are undoubtedly taken the day the coop and run were built. If you could see the "after" picture it'd be a whole 'nother story. Here's the Google link to ghetto chicken coops. I haven't laughed so hard in a long time at some of the ideas people come up with for coops, you've gotta admire the dedication and imagination. It'll make you feel much better about your yard :)

Subhanala, let me know if i can help get them to you if you get them. I'm between Edmond and Guthrie and will be picking up the Brahmas and could pick the Rocks at the same time up and meet you somewhere if you need me to.

Hi, my name is Kelly and I have a chicken addiction.

And I would have taken those brahmas and rocks in a heartbeat if Mitzi hadn't been lurking like a pirahna! As if anybody here could say the words "I have a female chicken I don't want" and NOT get a response. Those words in this group is like walking out amidst the flock with the treat bucket... if you're not careful we'll snap a finger off!

My how a persons life can change due to one simple idea. I make pens and a neighbor called me to come get a snake skin (I skin, tan, place on a brass tube and cast. This is the body of a pen.) My wife was going that afternoon to pick up 80 leghorn eggs for $80. He advised against it. For years he was the county extension agent and has raised game birds for 40 yrs. He ask "would you like some guinies? Here in lies my life changing experience. With 5 babies, I needed feed and a coop and run. And where they sell feed, they sell chicks. And oh yes, at POOPS, I learned chicks do not count in chicken math.

Oh my, what have I done to myself? I used to drink my coffee while watching the morning news. Now I drink my coffee while watching my 4-6 wk old chicks have breakfast in their run. What a joy, what a chore, what a job, what happiness. How can 20 or so little feathered creatures bring us so much pleasure by simply watching them. I was late putting them up last night as I was canning. As I had a momentary lull, I went to put them to bed. They're growing up now as all I had to do was close the door. They were already in the coop. I guess as a reward I start expanding the run. More work...............

And the little "silver/grey don't know what it is" I got at POOPS, I love the fact it has feathery legs. Now I wonder if it is fact a marans. But regardless, she's turning out beautiful.

Well, the crowing has started (maybe???) my chicks are only 7 and 9 weeks old, but today someone was screechy squawking as soon as I fed them (but only when i wasn't looking at them, can't figure out which bugger it is!)
I don't think it woke my husband up, but I'm just praying the dogs don't start barking at it. That will wake up hubs.

Also, I love that the minute someone said "extra hens" it was like the collective Okie thread immediately snapped to attention.
