No chance.  Today going through the rubble we were able to identify 9 white meated birds (which accounts for all or nearly all of the missing white meated birds) and 5 of the 9 Cemani.  She assumes since the fire was biggest and hottest in the Cemani pen the remaining birds were incinerated.  Those that she found were pretty far gone and fragmented.  If someone stole the birds and started the fire to hide the theft they would not have left so many Cemani behind, they are much too valuable.

And yet they knew right where to burn to make sure her Cemani died. If I were an arson investigator the first people I would check out would be anybody else in the region who wants to sell the breed and already has birds of their own. When corrupt businesses torch the competition, they don't steal the merchandise, because the merchandise is trackable.

While it is a possibility that jealousy or competition is a motive, I find that the vast majority of people who raise livestock of any kind have great compassion and respect for life. I would think it was much more likely a curmudgeonly neighbor who doesn't like chickens in the area for one reason or another. Of course, another possibility is a disturbed person who has a tendency to start fires--but I think they'd be more likely to start something that could make a much bigger blaze.

Thanks everybody. She had some very rare birds that are missing/dead. I took some of her survivors to my home to a spare pen and she is borrowing two of my empty coops and some of my cages with trays in the bottom. So immediate needs are met, but I'm sure she will appreciate any donations of materials or labor when she's ready to rebuild. For now they will use their tractor to clear away the old and burn it. I'll keep you updated or post her facebook update when she is ready to share.

Goliath update.

He is still hanging on. Seems not to be in pain and has plenty of fight in him when i I pick him up or have to secure him to feed or medicate him. I started him additionally with vitamin E and selenium, so were are on day 2 of that... He drinks with help or when he can find his waterer. (His water has antibiotics, electrolytes, D3 and Vitamin B drops). He is getting medicated mush feed, yogurt, cottage cheese, and whatever else i can get through a syringe. He spent last night free ranging in our bathroom where heater vents run along the floor and he moved around as well as he could.

He is hanging out on a towel as I am typing this and is standing up more often and once made more of an effort to lift his head than he has in the last four days.

Sad news though.... I found Billy Idol our Silver Bearded Silkie dead in the pen they shared with some EE pullets and an EE Rooster. They have lived in harmony until now and I Bet Billy Idol was protecting his ladies. I immediately separated them, My daughter is heartbroken over Billy- his Roo self and and hens were an early Christmas present.

The whole house is blue between Goliath's issues and now this. Billy Idol was a character true to his namesake. I promised Dani I would look for another Silkie Roo... Just not sure where to start.

On a side note all the other chickens, guineas, and Turkeys seem to be faring well, as well and the 7 little baby Americanas just hatched last week,

an idea I got from the wry neck thread. He got a bath enjoyed a blow dry then got the neck brace. He actually stood up the correct way with it on. Idk worth a try

Nothing ended up being missing, they only found 5 of the 9 cemani bodies, but they were pretty severely burned. She assumes the other 4 were disintegrated by the heat to the point we can't pick them out. We really are leaning disgruntled neighbor.

This has really taken a lot of wind out of her sails. She wants to ride out the rest of the winter with the remaining birds and decide where she wants to take things in the spring. For now I have loaned her two coops and some cages with trays. I also have some of her birds at my place. If and when she decides to rebuild she will let everyone know, maybe we can get some material donations or a day project organized. I'll post when I hear something.

Update on Little Joe...the little booger is eating me out of house and home. we have started a new bag of Suckle calf milk replacer. He gets two 1/2 gallon bottles in the morning, another 3/4 gallon at noon, another 3/4 gallon at 5:30 and a final gallon at 10:30. He nuzzles everywhere looking for the bottle. He is tasting grass and creep feed now so his gut is being inoculated for fermentation and cud chewing. Little Joe has a halter now and is learning to follow with a lead rope. He gets to go out to an enclosure on sunny days and bucks and runs and then flops down to enjoy the sun.


Chicks are hatching day after tomorrow...counted 15 in the box that I took from the brooder to the barn and there are 10 left in the big brooder. Then inside there are another 10 in the small brooder that hatched this past week. And someone said that hatching in winter was not easy...where there is the will, there is a way. Got my first White Wyandotte chick from the hens trio I purchased from Larry Dye at the Shawnee Show and have a pen of Columbian Wyandotte I've set. These are test hatches...at least that is what I'm telling Roger.

CSOkieChick is my young neighbor who has started an interest in chickens. She has posted a few times. When a dog attacked and killed a number of their birds including her Blue Cochin hen Azul, her dad was able to acquire 10 Black Cochin hens from Bo Garrett to go with the Blue Cochin rooster from me that survived the attack These hens are laying now and the Dad is becoming addicted to their birds. They have purchased a trio of Delaware Bantam. She wants to begin showing birds this spring. CJarvis gifted her with a young pair of Columbian OEGB and this young girl is in feather heaven!
It is such a joy to see her with her notebook and pen, writing down answers to the many questions she has. She and her dad have some very special times together with their shared interest.

What?; no scours? He must be some calf.
I never had an orphan calf that would drink that much. Even when I milked a cow, the calf took one side while I milked the other. We did this twice a day, and the calves were always healthy.
