***OKIES in the BYC III ***

How old does everyone wait to put chicks outside. I have some 9 week old orpingtons that are fully feathered for the most part, they would have a coop and everthing at night.. Thanks

I usually get them outside around 5 weeks old. They're usually feathered out by then. I bet they're gonna love being outside!

I have a rookie question. I hear if people culling chicks that hatch messed up or not true to the breed but what us actually done? How do you dispose of it? Not trying to be gory but what's the best method?

It depends sometimes "culling" simply means raising apart or selling from your chicks / flock that are true to whatever standard you are measuring them by. Only click on the spoiler if you want the more graphic answer to the question.

Sometimes "culling" is killing either for not meeting standard, being male, or some deformity for mercy killing. I think most that do very young ones generally snip the head off w/ a sharp scissor. I still have a very hard time w/ such hands on killing. The only very young ones I kill (cull) are for mercy since I don't raise for show or to meet a standard, if they don't meet the standard in my own head then they will eventually go to freezer camp, but when much older. When I kill the very young ones, I put them on the top of a bucket of sand (5 gall bucket) and shoot them in the head w/ my pellet gun. Overkill, sure, but it is done and quick and like I said I still have issues w/ such hands on killing.

Anyone recognize the breeding in this chick? I bought some "Barnyard mix" eggs at a very cheap price to fill up the tray in my incubator and this is one of the chicks that hatched.
I also bough a dozen light blue eggs labeled "Ameraucana" and I gave them to Jack to fill up a tray in his incubator. His hatch was really crazy. Almost all hatched and a few have beards but 4 were bantam chicks with heavily feathered eggs that really look like Cochin chicks and two of the chicks were Naked Necks!!!!!!

- all of the eggs in Jack's dozen were blue. We swear. - good thing the eggs were really cheap.

Well my 13 yo grandson came back from letting out the chickens and said the little roadrunner hen had chicks peeking out from under her feathers. She's a nest thief cause as far as I know she's never given the rooster the time of day. Can't say I blame her, he's a Jersey Giant! The chicks I saw are black. There are 4 nest boxes open but two JG's are sharing one box. Practically laying on top of each other. A JG decided to take a break and roadrunner took her nest. So the JG 's are sharing.

Seven beautiful silkie babies hatched this morning under mamas: two are blue, two are paint naked neck silkies, and three are paint regular silkies. Maybe things re getting better.

Hey ya'll

I need some advise on integrating this years new chicks with old hens. I have one group of 4, 5week olds another group of 5, 9 week olds and my group of 6 eleven month old hens.

How would you all integrate them together? I have them, all in separate groups, but only 2 coops and runs. The five week olds are still in the broader.

Thanks so much.
