***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Quote: Send me your address in a PM.

Well the damage wasn't as bad as it could be. The quail chicks, a BCM, and two special silkie chicks died but for the most part everyone else is fine. My juvenile BCM pullet outside in the big coop was squished in the mud just like her sister last week. I guess I am not ment to have bcm's.
So sorry for the losses, but glad it wasn't as bad as you originally thought.

Sad but thankful you really didn't lose many. Sometimes a breed just seems to elude you no matter how hard you try to get a good start with them!

But don't give up on them...once you get them started, they are great birds.

It looks like after tonight we should see a break in the rain! With 24.4 inches in McAlester and 19.5 in OKC, we got 20.75....such records across the state! Only 6.5 in the Panhandle.

Sure hope everyone is safe and gets to catch up on all the chores the rains have postponed.

I started letting the juvenile pen out to free range a few days ago. Their pen was the last to fill areas with mud. They were so excited and have even roamed into the front yard. I put two roosters with them who are familiar with the property and who are great protectors.

Everywhere the birds traffic, they mix the water with the dirt and make soupy mud....some of it cakes on everything as they walk around. I've been using a hoe to scrape off the roosts and coop floors, and board walks.
And I've ordered two loads of sand and a load of top soil as soon as it can be hauled. Once it is dry enough, we are going to raise the outside coops onto either cement blocks or railroad ties and fill the ground inside with top soil and sand and the put sand in the runs.
By adding a better slope and trench system, maybe water will drain better in the future...might be overkill since we don't usually get these amounts of rain, but rain and snow have always made for wet conditions in the permanent pens.

Heard from a friend that one of his customers, a rancher in the Little River area by Seminole, lost 30 head of cattle. He waited too late to move his herd to higher ground. When he did try to move them, the water under the bridge was too high and fast to get the herd out....such a shame and a waste!

We opened gates so our herds could move to higher ground and every evening the lead cows begin the trip to the hills for the night. We haven't moved cows to our Prague property on the Deer Creek yet because the creek is flood prone as runoff rains move south. The creek turns into a river capable of taking huge trees.
We were told when we bought the property that if we were in the creek after a rain, if we heard a roaring sound to immediately get to higher ground. The water rolls in that quickly.

Well, this "Chatty Kathy" is going to pull some weeds in the garden for the pheasants.

Lori, so sorry for your losses, but what a relief it wasn't as bad as first thought.

NanaKat, still in complete awe over your industriousness and your expertise in so many areas, as well as your generosity. You are a remarkable woman!

Some of our pens are very muddy, but so far no losses. I'm very frustrated--aren't we all--by being unable to work in the yard or many of the pens. It's wonderful our drought is finally over!

Not chicken related but can anyone tell me a easy way to put up new potatoes with skin on.everything i can find say to peel.

Cause of the potential dirt in the skin?

The reason to peel is because the skin produces tannins which make your canned potatoes bitter and turn the water brown.
I either scrape the new potatoes or boil them, cool and slip the skins. Then I pressure cook them in pint jars with a 1/2 tsp of canning salt per pint.

I put a cow in the barn a couple days ago thinking it would be dry for her. That evening she was bawling and I went to see what was wrong. She was standing in mud up to her belly. I turned her back out but all the ground is like that. I checked the chicken house and could feel the mud under even dry straw. I raked it out and put some plywood down and straw on top of that but hope the birds don't get sick

This rain has made life harder on man & beast! Chin up though, we have a few days to dry out it appears :) I hope your chickens don't get sick

I am beyond devastated.

I'm sorry for your losses and glad it wasn't as many as you feared.

Can you do me a huge favor? Can you open your package and tell me how many tablespoons of powder are in it?

-Kathy

I can do that this evening. I know how many tbs I've used & will measure them out when I make new water. I'm using 1 tbs per gallon at this time. Figure it heals them or kills them. But, being sick, damp, and having colder weather move in is going to kill them without intervention anyway. So....

Hubby "Why does the bathroom smell like a wet dog?"
Me "The smell isn't a wet dog. It is the smell of the wet hen I had to bathe because she was caked in mud?"
Hubby "Is she going to be okay. Did you blow her dry? Does she need your special recipe? Where will she spend the night? Maybe in the bathroom?"
Me. "Yes, yes, yes and yes."

Gotta love a man who thinks like that.

That little hen is snuggled down in a cardboard box in the bathroom after her spa treatment and special meal.
