***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I am not sure why by my chickens dont seem to be having trouble with this heat. I spray down the cages once a day and keep the water full (I am using a nipple system now and it drips). They are still running arround and laying, we are up from 5 eggs a day to 8. (We got two new layers this last week).

We let them out and they run to their favorite dusting spot. But they seem fine. I was worried.

I just hope this heat ends soon!

Iv ben feeding milo an wheat no corn in the heat..to all the older bird's . An chick starter to the chick's ...A guy next door is soaking oat's over night for his bird's an that help's keep thim cool an is good for new feather's ..Just cuting out the corn in this heat will help alot even buying the rabbit feed with out corn in it....not much going on today just keeeping cool ..

Oh no! I'm so sorry! I'm scared to death for my birds since all I have is silkies. I've been putting frozen juice bottles in their coop and giving them frozen melon everyday when it's hottest. So far so good...but it sure is scarey! We've got a big church picnic with fireworks today and I'm going to have to sneak away for a couple hours to check on my chickens! Think I might have to make up another excuse so I don't sound to crazy! lol

Betsy! I am so sorry! I was afraid i was going to lose the wrytail girl from you, but a cool bath and electrolytes brought her out of it- so i moved the risky one into cooler areas and am going out and soaking the ground every few hours and ice jugs- they hang out next to the duck pen which is muddy- so i guess cooler- i need to get some misters- the ducks seem to be doing ok with it, but the egg production is down to just a couple a day

nana- love the pictures- gives me a few ideas

Thank you that was awesome! I do wet inside if it's dry air but on really humid days I wet outside and only a tiny bit inside the coop. I too have a couple of burlap feed bags that I sprinkle down but they don't stay wet long. They sure do cool the air though, gotta figure out a way to get a wick method so they can draw water more. I need to get some plywood for extra shade I guess, have to rely on a neighbor to get big stuff for me and unload and put it up since I'm disabled. I do have areas of grass that are wet too so it'll stay green. Rest of yard is dry and burning up but the chicken's big fenced yard is still green due to all the watering stuff around there. The birds dust bathe outside after about 7 p.m. when all is in the shade and it's cooler. They can free range all day but won't go out of their cool shady protected pen until evening, then they take their baths. I feed the chilled melons and stuff in the covered pen so I don't have to deal with wasps/bees inside the chicken coop.

I open their coop to let them free range about 6:30 a.m. and they go out till about 11 a.m. then the sun gets up overhead and no shade then, so the rest of the day it's back to the muddy covered cool area until evening time.

I feed very little scratch since I knew corn was heating. It also makes the yolks a pretty dark color. Oats are great but will make very pale yolks. Some egg buyers want the dark yolks. I just want cool birds right now. They are eating half as much of their layer pellets since yesterday due to the heat.
I'm going to sprout them some more wheatgrass greens for added nutrition.

I no peep that tryd having thim out that way an ther just isnt that manny chicken's out ther to have one if it was one time in the fall one time in the spring you mite get some Bis.

Like they have out this way so peep stopd comeing ..Carnagie had a real good one the first few time's about 15 yrs ago farm peep buy good in the early spring but wen it get's warm out they stop buying . It was in a old store down town an was cool in ther the last one they had was in July an i bot every thing ther cheap..
Blanchard is the Border line for peep that have bird's east of ther the more bird's you get in to... west the les chicken's an chicken peep they are .
One on a week night would work better than one on a weekin buyer's go to the sale's on the weekin an cant make it ..Peep from Texas come up to the sale in Durant an buy an to some of the other sale's that keep's price's up an make's a market for the bird's....
Any way that's my thot's ...I no it would be great for you guy's not to have to drive all night an day to a chicken sale..........

Dodge City has one that has gotten pretty big. They sale junk, then poultry rabbits, then goats and sheep last. Been awhile since I been there, but it is in regular sale barn with watercoolers and is pretty comfortable. I talked to my nephew and he goes there pretty regular and said prices still good there and it is still getting bigger. Again Dodge is like Blanchard, Cement etc. Just a real far drive.

Ksane! Yours is a familiar story about finding an interesting chicken, doing some research, falling in love with chickens and the next thing you know you're buried in feathers. Ha! Wow - you have a 12 year old Guinea?! That's amazing. Glad you found us!
