***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Had our first heat loss yesterday. I was at a birth and though dh gave them fresh water he did not spray down the coop. (I did t ask him to either). I guess that must have been why they were doing so well. We have been getting 6-8 eggs a day out of 11 hens (some were just starting to lay so they did not go every day. )

Rip princess Julia and Paprika. My 5 yr old was crying. Julia was her chicken.

It is gonna be hotter today and tomorrow. I am worried.

Sorry for you loss! I lost one yesterday to & the only thing I can think of is the heat, it is the first grown chicken I have lost. Sooner or later it will cool down & I plan to slim down my flock for winter. I have way too many.

I got three EE's from poco pollo about three weeks ago and my other hens still don't like them very much. It's getting better as they get older though. They are the sweetest things! They pretty much hang together away from the others. I have one hen that's the main aggressor (i think she wants to be a rooster

) and likes to chase them around. The other hens just don't want them eating any of the treats.

morning okies! not gonna think about the heat- that will make it go away, right?? haven't lost any, set up my homemade mister- a holey hose for them, it does help- for all who have lost some..

i am not a summer person, was thinking as a kid when it was hot they'd turn out the lights to keep it cool....think that was psychology, we carried around wet paper towels to keep cool or ice cubes... so glad we have air conditioning!

we are going in a buying the months feed today, after reading your posts- FIL was talking about possibly getting a few milk goats- he is watching this heat and economy and telling stories of his childhood during the depression- scary stuff

woke up to my 2 little cockerels having a squeak competition

A couple of months ago I thought I lost one of our Polish/Silkie cross hens. Located her about two weeks later on a hidden nest. Thought I might as well let her try to hatch because she was so determined. Well she hatched five chicks (out of 8 eggs) and they are funny looking Polish/Silkie (bantam) X Brown Leghorn (standard)

Had the other cross hen go missing last month and sure enough she was on a nest. She was joined by the Americana hen and looks like they may have hatched 6 or 7 chicks this weekend.

Yes the lack of mosquitos is nice. Sucks though that all the animals that might have died from west nile, hthings for the bright sideave stroked out due to the heat. Just goes to show, man or beast (or bird) we aint getting out of here alive.

Thats funny:lau:gig

Well I have a new project to start on. Have a lady wanting me to make her a goat milk stand. And the good part is she will trade it for some Icelandics!I love tradeing better than buying anyday!Another sweltry day today. It gets in the 60s at night and close to a hundred in afternoon. My blue stem ornamental grasses are going to head, surely fall can't be far away! But I was thinking yesterday ,the trees and shrubs haven't reached that "end of summer, stop growing" period yet so I guess its still aways off.
