***OKIES in the BYC III ***

May have to put a reinenforce rod on the bottom to NaNa. That wire from lowes is pretty bendable. A small gauge piece of rebar makes a good floor support. Otherwise it may bow down under the weight of the LF. Got a bunch of eggs yesterday and only two today. The seramas are the best everyday layers of the bunch!Too bad they are only pigeon size eggs!

PoCo thats a very pretty hen! Sometimes the cross ones outshine the purebreds!

She's a cross on purpose. Out of a dozen or so she is the best (color/body shape/size). We ate a few at seven weeks that dressed out at about four pounds: very tender, lots of breast and thigh meat. She lays more eggs than my pure-bred Cornish pullet, but her eggs are still quite small. I'm hoping in January to start setting her eggs. I've got an amazing dark Cornish rooster in that pen. Pepper loaned him to me for my breeding project. Too bad my hens aren't laying much these days. I figure the progeny from the dark Cornish rooster and this cross hen will make some good meaty breeding stock. Here's Pepper's roo with his harem: two big white rock hens, one rock X Cornish hen, one pure dark Cornish hen, one big NH Red hen, and two big Barnevelder hens. I'm only getting an egg a day from all those girls. They are on strike due to cold weather.

I wish you had said something... I have plenty of good wire here, we get it directly from Albright Steel in OKC, it is much more cost effective and much better wire. The 14 gauge 1 x 1/2 and 1x1 is sold in 100 ft rolls in 6 inch increments starting at 18 inches. going up to 48. that is some real tough stuff.
based on how you mae the pen you should not need a metal support and could make them stacked or side by side either way add 1 inch to the bottom before you start placing teh flooring in to allow for a poop tray.

Thanks Wayne...will do that. These will be set n top of a metal frame so they can stack, but the rebar will come in handy if the cages need to be moved with a bird inside. Appreciate the suggestion.

I wondered about where to find a heavier gauge wire. I'm going to stack two cages beginning 18 inches up off the floor...easier for me to bend over to tend the lower one and to allow for space for birds to walk under them. The metal racks will be welded so each cage has a poop drawer space in the shelving. At least that's my vision. I have been using some of those old style rabbit cages with the pull out metal poop drawer...that tin deteriorates pretty quickly.
I have one cage that has no spacing for a drawer, but has strips along the bottom edge to hold in wood shavings on a flat surface. It takes a little longer to clean that cage, but for chicks or a bird with an injured foot, it keeps the bird off the wire floor.

PoCo there should be some gorgeous chicks come out that pen! And they will be those huge chicks too! That will be a fun hatch!

Nana, after years of cage building I guess you learn a few tricks! And boy do I have years of doing it. To bad I didn't put all that energy into doing something that would have made me rich instead of a chicken lover!lol

Gotta spend the day tomorrow cleaning house, wife has folks comming in from Okla. Love the company but hate the cleaning!lol

Have a great Holidys Auctionlover!
