***OKIES in the BYC III ***

One guy I'll never forget wore socks on his hands so having an inquiring mind I asked "Why do you wear socks on your hands?" Honest to God this was his answer ..................... "It is to remind me not to chew off my fingers ANYMORE." After which he showed me all 8 fingers had been chewed off to the second knuckle, and both thumbs to the first knuckle. So appearently socks are a better deterent then pain, squirting blood, crunching bone????

On the bright side he never has to worry about getting dirt under his nails...

Everyone talking about lice and mites on the birds got me worried a bit cause I haven't checked mine for anything like that in so long so I grabbed a couple out of each area and haven't seen any sign of infestation, I have never used anything other than DE I put it in the bottoms of nest boxes and the floor of the coops and throw a quarter cup or so in the holes they make for dust bathing and every once in a while I sprinkle some in the feed barrel, I also drink a spoon of it in a glass of water daily when I think about it it seems to help my knees not hurt all the time and is supposed to be good for skin and hair among a whole list of other health benefits, tastes a little like dirt but not too unpleasant, and if nothing else it does seem to be working for the chickens since (knock on wood) I've never had a parasite problem on them that I know of.

I got my Dubia today! I love these guys (as far as roaches go-haha).
Kass, is this one with the red arrow a female? I hope so but I'm not sure. Most of them look like this, I'm hoping he sent me a bunch of good sized females.

I'm really enjoying the roaches myself LOL I was going to say looks like a female but it gets a lot easier to tell later the males look more like a giant version of the household kind with the wings.

Speaking of which, Did you see that the Bronx zoo is running a Valentines day promotion you can have a roach named after your sweetie for $10. LOL It is supporting a good cause but I'm thinking the target audience is somewhat limited.

rofl! I hope to someday be as good at roach butts as Kass! Thanks for the info though, seriously. I know Jim's just chomping at the bit to get ahold of that one!
Bill, you might be interested in this. This is what I ended up doing for the bug waterers. Here's the water crystals I got at the Dollar Store (for a dollar lol). The bugs do actually eat these water crystals, that's how they get the water out of them. But if you do it this way (or with the hole in the bottom of a plastic bottle) they'll drink the water in the cracks between the water crystals instead. Which seems like it'd be healthier for them and not fill their stomachs up with plastic. Believe it or not I read an entire thread about the subject lol! Just hold your finger over the hole in the chick waterer when you turn it right side up until you get the water crystals put in.
And Jim, here's a picture just for you of one of the Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. I'm sure once your wife sees a close-up of this beautiful face she'll fall in love with them same as I have, just look at those darling little hairy legs.

I see he's missing one of his antenna, better get a prosthetic out.......

I'm gonna have to do this with the waterer I've got a heat lamp over the tubs till I get a heat pad without auto shut off, The lamp dries out the crystals pretty fast I guess the central heat in here makes the humidity lower also, I noticed that a lot of mine have their antenna missing parts or all of them. I'm betting he seller has some very large colonies LOL

Elwood,
I see that you upgraded to a Platinum membership. Does being able to set the number of posts per page in your view screen make it easier to get BYC to load for you?

Seems to me to take just as long to load the page set to 100 posts as it did before makes catching up easier for me anyway, I don't have anything blocked like sig lines etc.. so far I like it better this way,

Evening,

I've got one EXTREMELY LOUD ee in the hatcher tonight. He's making so much noise that the babies in the brooder in the next room are answering back. I hope the rest of the eggs pip soon. So far only two others are rocking a little, but maybe by tomorrow I'll have another hatcher full of fluffy babies.

My home-schooling friend is ready to have the chicks she hatched picked up. I didn't hear from her directly, but DH reports that they are starting to fly. Some are bumping their heads on the screen top of the brooder. That's a really good sign.

Duck question, I found a nest with 5 eggs in it and removed them, the next day found another and she hasn't laid in it since, Will taking the eggs cause the duck to find a new nest or has she maybe taken a break, I found another nest with 5 eggs in it I don't know if it's the same hen or another one, The first one I found is one of the Pekin hens I got from Coral not sure who is laying in the other nest.

Dont know much about ducks. But if I want a hen to keep laying and dont want to leave the eggs in the box. I put a few golf balls in the nest. Might work with ducks too.
