***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Morning folks! Broodiness is an epidemic...once one starts the others decide thats a good idea! good grief- the ones i want broody won't and the ones that do go broody take the fav box!

Fortunately we haven't seen nor smelled skunk yet unless it's on the highway. Haven't seen evidence of the racoons or possom yet either. I usually trap a few each spring in the garden. We did see 5 coyotes trailing acrosss the pasture yesterday morning. Guns are at the ready.

I have been lucky enough to hit two skunks in the past month on hwy 270. My car even after washing it still has the distinct skunky smell. It is like they see me coming and dart out in the road just in time for me to hit them, lol.

Wow! Some of y'all have LOTS of chicks! What on earth are you going to do with all of them?

.

We will keep 6 or so pullets and a roo or two out of each batch and then sell the rest in a month or so once I can sex them. I need more laying hens for eggs. I have lots of people from church wanting fresh eggs but right now my laying hens are barely laying enough for us and my MIL. Of course that is 9 people, lol. Now my breeding hens are laying up a storm (of course that is how it usually goes, lol). The chicks we are hatching I will sell some of them to help offset the cost of having them hatched and keep some for our own breeding next spring. But I won't know what ones I will keep until they feather out and see just how many we will keep.

But in a month or so I will have lots of young birds to sell, just have to decide what auction would be best to take them to. Or sell them on craigslist.

I KNEW better than to look at hatching eggs! It's NoCityBoys fault for reminding me of the Dark Brahama-not my fault and I refuse to take responsibility.
Sooner, was it you or Poco who had the Double Laced Barnevelder? I'm thinking of buying 6 eggs. I remember that picture one of you posted and that was a gorgeous bird. Reminded me of my Dark Cornish except on a regular sized chicken.

I have double laced Barnevelder. My eggs are all pre-sold until the end of March. If you'd like eggs in April, just let me know. We can work something out.

Good Morning Okies...went to bed early last night in the recliner....

Didn't buy anything from the auction but did buy two minim satin rabbits from a lady who was going out of business. One is Siamese colored and the other is a blue. So now I have a good start of that breed with a buck and three does.
Nice purchase Wayne...never saw a blue satin...would you post pictures?

Nana my flock is doing well, i think i have to many breeds and to many birds total , hatching a few ever week. in Okie talk it aint real smart
Glad to hear your flock is doing great. Roger thinks I'm getting a lot of birds too...Mawahahahahaw
How is Johnnie doing? Let her know We thinking of her.

I see broody as the hen's version of PMS and considering it is or soon will be spring.... its logical that they are "in the mood" at this time of year.

Are there supplements or light therapy or some other technique You use to get them off of broody? I would think that just like the light plays a role in our cabin fever / seasonal depression... it must play a role in triggering broodiness in hens.

Any insight from other BYC hobbyists?

I put red chili pepper in the feeder with their layer pellets. When one does go broodie, she gets placed in a cage mounted up on the wall with no catchpan under it...purpose being to cool her vent and bottom...A broodie hen naturally has a warmer tummy for incubating eggs. Carl also said having a cage hanging from the ceiling so it sways a little is good too. I did that with one hen..it worked, but I kept hitting my head on the cage.

Robyn...glad to hear Scruffy is better.
