So we're forcing the big kids to forage during the day, what do the guineas do? They go to the small coop with the little guineas and are trying to pull the chicken wire off of it to get the food. Lazy bums.

The eggs were set at 3 different times so I'm already using the small one for a hatcher lol

Actually you may be right! Boys are genetically the weaker sex lol

actually when it comes to poultry that is actually backward. if you have incubator or hatcher issues, temp issues and similar it will be the males that hatch and the pullets do not make it.

Cjarvis, i forget that there are some others that have games, how are you on color genetics? i am not so much interested in the "game" as I am the color patterns i can get from this cross of Ginger Red and Grey(Silver), Also, i was under the understanding that it is hard to get a Pheasant to breed with chickens!? thanks, Lynn

I am pretty solid on genetics abd color probabilieties but it will depend on which bird is the male in the pen to get it right, and by grey I assume you mean silver duckwing pattern not Birchen right..
Pheasant males will openly breed hens when given the opportunity, to increase that opportunity take any female pheasants away..

Well all the birds are fed, watered and ready for the day. We so far have 3 dry chicks, I took them out of the hatcher the others have been chirping but no one else has pipped. ?
I counted a whole lot more than 3 in the hatcher Kathie, and they are still in there, They should be ready to pick up tomorrow without problems there are over 2 dozen. This is your last hatch that I have here.

I candled eggs today and only 6 of the 14 shipped Silver Laced/Gold Laced Cochin eggs are growing now at Day 6. 1 other is questionable but I suspect it's a quitter. 3 of the ones growing had broken air sacs along with the 1 questionable one that I'm leaving in for right now. I marked the ones with broken air sacs and am anxious to see if any of those hatch. All 7 that I tossed had broken air sacs. I opened them up before I threw them away, 2 weren't fertile and 5 were early quitters &/or blood rings.
I got 12 Silver Laced Cochin eggs at Newcastle Apr 7th and only 4 of those were even fertile, I broke them open after a week to be sure that was the reason they didn't grow, nope-not fertile. I've got 2 of those in lockdown and 2 more going into lockdown next week, At this rate I'll be really lucky if I get 5 Cochins out of the 26 eggs I set. And 2-3 of those are going to be males which I wouldn't be keeping,
Not great luck with the Cochin eggs, huh?

getting good fertility in a good cochin is a real test of patients, they have a great deal of fluff and feather to get past. Best success rates are with AI and beyond that at least trimmed around the vent and tail, but preferably plucked.

Hiya Everyone!

I had this conversation last night about peeling eggs we've talked about it here before a few times what's the best and easiest way, I don't know how well this would work but just got it off FB thought I'd have to share it and try it for myself, this is what was recommended:
For anyone that may not know, the BEST way to make hard-boiled eggs is in the OVEN! Place the eggs in a muffin tray so they do not move around, turn the oven to 325 degrees, pop in for about 25-30 minutes and remove! Not only are they tastier, but they also are much easier to peel!

Gotta be worth tryin' at least once LOL the post says won't blow up and no water needed...

Quote: Speaking of issues, Hiya Carl I just finished up a hatch in my new hatcher I built and have the same drying problem the humidity was around 80% (felt like more to me) at least that's what the hygrometer said it was, wondering if you had any suggestions as to how to fix that or what's causing the chicks to pip and or zip and then stick to the lining and shell and are unable to get out of the egg? I did the last hatch still air and have a lot of issues, was thinking maybe it's too much open air space above the egg? I didn't have this problem like this so much before and didn't change anything except to remove a couple small fans that stirred air, but, that doesn't seem to be the cause or didn't fix it anyway...

Sounds to me like you have air moving too rapidly and possibly in zones of the hatcher.
Did you balance the temp on all the trays using only the vents then set the temp when done?
How much air is moving in the hatcher and does it move evenly across all the trays?
For a cabinet hatcher a small refridgerator fan from the bottom of the fridge placed in the top of the hatcher to circulate air slow and steady works best, if the air moves too quickly the chicks will dry to the shell no matter what the humidity is.
