***OKIES in the BYC III ***

These 4 Bantam Cochins I got from Newcastle are a month old now and don't look like they've grown a bit, they've got tiny wing feathers but that's it, they all scream bloody murder if their temp gets below 90. I've tried so many times to lower their temp and they huddle up and scream (literally lol) until I turn it back up. The 1st LF Silver Laced Cochin that hatched was bigger than them when it hatched, they were 3 wks old then. I took that little one out of their brooder where he'd been and put him in with the newly hatched LF Cochins and the Orps because he was too hot in with the Bantams. Those of you who've raised Bantam Cochins or any tiny breed-is this typical? I did lose one of them a week ago, have no idea why.realize they were reading :)
So glad you Fav. girl is doing better.
I'm sorry you lost the bantam Cochin chick. I meant to talk to you at POOPS but I wasn't thinking very fast that day. Bantam Cochins are small but mine don't seem to mind when I lower the temps. each week. I'll have to take a pic of the chicks I kept from that hatch. They are at 80* and have some feathers started on their backs and are more than double their hatch size. They eat like piggys. I feed the Nutrea chick starter 16% protein.

Ooooh Les. Love the lacing. Do they come in a blue laced?

If all goes well I should have some blues with black laceing in a couple of years. Right now I am working to get a nice flock of blues.

The two splash males we have are doing an excellent job of throwing blue babies and I will have to wait and see how they look once they get some size on them.

Bill here is a picture of a porous egg, the white spots are where the egg shell is thin which is what lets too much moisture out and bacteria in. That is the main reason these don't hatch.

This is another one that probably went 50% before it gave up. It is what is called a blood-ring. It is also the reason that you handle quitters with great care!

I can't take credit for them or for even recognizing if they were purebred or not. I just fell in love with them at the auction and had to have them lol

Silly Jim! Why would I want to breed more and keep them? I've already got the sweetest ones I'll ever have.
And Kass has given me ideas......stacking chickens like fish people stack tanks! It's perfect.

One of them is twice the size as the other 3. I'm really wondering if gender has anything to do with it. That's the one that has the longest wing feathers, too. None of them have shoulder feathers started but their wing feathers sure look funny sticking out in all stubby directions lol I'm going to do what Laura did-they know if they're cold. If they want heat longer than what I'm used to chicks wanting heat, who am I to deny them their heat lamp?

I feed Stillwater Milling, it's 18% protein. Although I wonder if it perhaps had anything to do with it because I had switched to a batch of Purina starter? They're back to their normal now as of last week. I can sometimes sneak these guys down to 88 but it's not 10 min and they're hollering. I wouldn't even have noticed except I have the digital temp things in brooders now.

Les, I think I've got one of those late stage quitters right now. It looks like fluid in there and the non-moving baby just floats around. Is that a pretty clear indication it died? I'd hate to take a live one out :-(

Thanks for the pics. I really respect your knowledge.

Well, another POOPS for the history books. Number five! Glad so many got to come but alas
I never got to meet everyone. Always seems to be too much going on to get around to everyone.
I think for next year I will try and plan for a better opportunity to meet with folks.
This event is successful because it brings good people together. Those of us that work hard to
do the things it takes to produce the event know that it still would not be a success if not for
all of the people who attend. So everyone who comes to this event has a hand in making it a hit!
I would personally like to thank a few folks that helped in various areas and without whom, POOPS
wouldn't have happened.

To everyone else for whatever it was that you may have done to make this an outstanding event, but mainly for just being there!

To all of you for all your hard work. It made our first POOPS a great experience and we're looking forward to many more! Thank you everyone for a great day!

Hey Poopsters! I ended up with some plastic bowls and utinsels, two ice chests and a cooler. And three roosters.
I have found where the ice chest and cooler go. (Old Cowboy) and the roosters (Oakieridge) but not the plastic bowls.
On the flip side, my long extension cord hitched a ride home with someone. It is orange and was plugged in behind the
grill and ran over to the food warmer.
If anyone finds it stowing away with your cords let me know and I will make plans to send the cord patrol to bring it home.
Thanks again to everyone who brought stuff and helped in anyway.

I think we have it. We brought a bunch of cords and DH might have grabbed yours by accident. I laughed when you said 'orange', they usually are, huh, and so easy to mix up. I think I'll tag ours from now on to prevent future oopsies. (need that embarrassed smilie again *lol*) If all goes as planned we'll be in Shawnee on the 23rd and can meet you there or somewhere in-between if you'd like, unless you need it sooner than that. I'm starting a new job that week and am hoping I won't have to reschedule the doc appointment I have that day. I'll PM you any updates if that works for you.

Bantam cochins don't have size differences at that age. Sounds like 3 aren't thriving. I have a Mille Fleur Cochin chick that hatched a week ago that is no bigger that the chicks I took out of the hatcher yesterday. He/she had a hard time hatching, didn't dry fluffy. It acts fine but still is small. I don't recall your chicks having a difficult time. I'm sorry. if they don't make it I'll replace them.
I worry for every little chick. If I plan on hatching 100 this season I'm in for alot of nail biting.
