***OKIES in the BYC III ***

woke up at 4 with knee issues, guess its complaining about yesterdays work...

listening to the various rooster voices- funny how each is so distinctive- hoping the rest the eggs hatch with no issues, losing eggs to hen box wars is beyond frustrating!

off to find coffee and breakfast

I hate it when I wake up hurting, which is most mornings. But, I have been going through a stage lately where nothing much hurts except my messed up right foot (knock on wood). I feel for your knees!

I thought I'd give you all an update on Serama Sam and his big blue cochin friend. I figured out yesterday that the cochin is blind. For a while after I got her (?), I was afraid she was sick because she doesn't move around a whole lot and felt really thin. I've suspected for a while now that there was something wrong with her vision, and yesterday confirmed that she is nearly if not totally blind. Little Serama Sam has taken on the role of seeing eye dog, though. It's amazing. He never gets more than a couple of feet away from her and talks to her almost constantly.
Here's a couple of pics of the two of them. If it looks like Mutt and Jeff now, just think how it will be in 6 months when she has most of her growth!

I think I have a partially blind maran chick. She is about 4 weeks old. She doesn't away when I open the brooder like the others and when I look at her eyes one has a smaller pupil and is cloudy looking.

Really cute yours has its own personal helper. Hopefully mine gets one of them :)

A truely happy ending! She can keep him warm in the winter too.

DH's cousin has a blind horse that has a guide donkey.

just went out to feed and water, and darned if the broody i have been arguing with didn't leave her remaining egg on the nest and snuggle with her sister- so the egg is in the bator, it was cold, any chances for it- it is due to hatch

Cathie, I have to ask, why was there a mirror in the guinea pen? I am just curious, didn't know if this helped them in some way. LOL It was driving me crazy wondering about it!

I hope the guinea gets to feeling better. I just had one of my Buff Orps get stuck under a metal colander I am using to drain their fermented feed. We looked for over a hour for that bird the night before. Next morning I was wondering what the colander was doing off its shelf and when I picked it up out popped Kingston, jabbering like crazy. Poor thing had gone through a light rain under there and looked like a drowned rat. I guess he had been trying to sneak some extra FF and it fell on him. He is fine now and running around. I brought him in and put him in a cage with warm mash and a heat light to dry off. He did not let me hear the end of it for some time and I am still getting glared at!!
We have two mirrors for the guineas, they are vain little buggers I tell you! One is for the guineas in the breeding pen and one for the free rangers. The free rangers are not ver smart. They stand on top of their mirror and look at themselves upside down

. This one must have just snapped the wire while he was up there and it fell over with him. Or he was looking at himself when one of the others knocked it over. Hopefully he is okay. I didn't have time before leaving for work to go check on him so waiting on an update from Kurtis. Poor man has to put down a chick this morning too. It came out of the hatcher with a lame leg.

We now have 6 guineas pipped in the hatcher. How long do I leave them to their own befor I worry about them? I hate our last hatch had 3 that zipped completely and then quit. I probably should have done something for them. I have the humidity up, they are in my LG to hatch and the windows have water on them, lol. I hope they all make it.

Guineas love to look at themselves in mirrors. I read somewhere to put a mirror on their pen so they wouldn't fly up and sit by the house and poop all over the porch while they're staring in the windows. Here's my guinea mirror:

One of my Dominique roosters found it quite threatening.

LOL we had our extra Golden Salmon Rooster in the guinea pen until this weekend. He used to fight with that mirror constantly!!! It was what we called good ol' redneck entertainment!
