Not exactly from your area, but
Regular feed shouldn't be that far off of the nutritional needs of a chicken no matter what the age I wouldn't think. A lot of people don't even use chick start, just an all purpose grower/developer and adding Ca free choice for the layers. If it really is a nutritional issue, I would think it is more the chick not being able to process the nutrition properly in the food?????ok, thanks! they were on the regular feed for all the chickens- stupid me.... so now they are on starter and savachick and polyvisol....
what i do with my emily is vet wrap her stub when it is causing her problems, but you need to tape it with duct tape so they don't pull it offGood morning all! I have a question, My rooster has stubs where his feet should be. I bought him from a lady that should have no business with animals... well, I feel like he is having some pain when putting pressure on one of his "stubs". Is there something I can to help releive some of this pain such as gauze or something? Thank you for the help!
Thank you! I will try this when I get home. I just hate to see him hurtwhat i do with my emily is vet wrap her stub when it is causing her problems, but you need to tape it with duct tape so they don't pull it off
Also, do you have any suggestions on how I should wrap it? leave it wrapped? and how often should I change it? Thanks again!what i do with my emily is vet wrap her stub when it is causing her problems, but you need to tape it with duct tape so they don't pull it off
I've been reading up on it again (read up last year also) and I would think not. Marek's seldom hits *all the chicks at once and they're normally older. It takes 4-12 wks minimum for the signs to show up and I just don't think the chick is old enough. And it certainly wouldn't hit all 3 at the same time. Marek's usually takes out 1 or 2 chicks at various times. The way it works is it's a virus that causes tumors in different areas, the limbs, the brain, the organs, etc. It attacks just *one of those areas depending on which strain of the virus it is. So the strain that causes blindness is the one that (sometimes) can cause what they call 'gray eye'. The strain that causes lameness is what causes the classic Marek's "one foot in front, one foot behind" posture, etc.morning guys- what are the chances of mareks in my silkie chicks? i have 3 1-month olds, 1 can't walk, one is twitching and losing ability to walk- i was thinking nutrition but now i am not sure - brainstorming time...
When some of my 8 wk old chicks last October were exposed to e coli (presumably from the older chickens tracked on our feet since all chickens have it in their system) I thought it could be Marek's or a vitamin deficiency also. Because first 1 chick then a 2nd chick got real lame, could barely walk and when she did she was real wobbly. The vet said when chicks get weak they get wobbly like that and people confuse it with lameness. I really think you're dealing with weakness and not lameness. A bacterial infection like e. coli is entirely possible, very possible actually, when you have adults and babies at the same residence. Or botulism or salmonella, coccidia, there's so many. Take their temperature, normal is around 105 . The vet told me Marek's causes NO rise in temperature, The chick I took in to him (who ended up dying) had a temp of 108.
I know people here shake their heads at me (I can see you all do it lol!) because I bleach my feet and change shoes before entering the different chicken yards. But I can't bear to lose babies I've raised from tinies to one of the many random diseases that can affect them only because they don't have mature immune systems.
And feeding them adult food wouldn't cause it, honestly. So don't beat yourself up about that. All chicken feed has basically the same vitamins and minerals added and can be fed to all ages.
Although given the fact their feed wasn't medicated coccidia is a strong possibility...... Sulmet is stronger and kills more strains of coccidia than Corid so I'd certainly run to the feed store and get a bottle of Sulmet and get them started ASAP. Coccidia can and does cause extreme weakness like you're seeing.
Ok, I'll shut up.
