Just wanted to say hello to everyone. I'm new to chickens, and live in Tulsa. You all seem like a good group of folks to pry for information. Well, hope you all are having a great day.

What kind of chickens do you have or want?

Anyone watch GMA. Right now there is a news story on chicken feed being linked to humans experiencing more issues w super bugs. They are saying it is because chickens are eating antibiotics in their feed daily.

CAUTION! DUMB QUESTION TO FOLLOW!
I've got 6 chicks coming and they have to be outside not inside. I have a shady area under the back deck and it's protected and safe from the big chickens etc. So If it's 90 to 100 degrees during the day that's fine but do I really need a HEAT LAMP? for nigh-time temps that are in the high 70's? Aarrgghhh!!!!
Now that's a good hen.Yes, or a mom to crawl under. You might see if one of your hens will accept them. What breeds do you have? My NN hens will flog me if I go outside with a chick in my hands and try to take it away from me.
Why would you clip the wings of a non flying breed? Curious here.Yes you clip there wings just like chickens.
It's not the chickens that build up resistance to antibiotics. It's the bugs that build up the resistance, and then you can't kill them. Are they saying that the food producers are putting the antibiotics in the feed and not listing it on the bag or in the ingredient list? I would hope not. They could build up resistance to antibiotics when they ever do get sick or need them.
Subtherapeutic doses of antibiotics infuriate me. It's why we raise our own food, or buy it from people who raise it the way we believe in.One of several reasons we do what we do... to give the public options outside that sort of thing.
I don't know why it would even be a surprise. Prophylactic medication of any kind is bad for the birds and bad for the environment. All it does is create animals with weak immune systems and bugs resistant to medication, and in this case for no other reason than to make the chickens grow faster or lay more productively.
