***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Just wanted to say hello to everyone. I'm new to chickens, and live in Tulsa. You all seem like a good group of folks to pry for information. Well, hope you all are having a great day.

What kind of chickens do you have or want?

Anyone watch GMA. Right now there is a news story on chicken feed being linked to humans experiencing more issues w super bugs. They are saying it is because chickens are eating antibiotics in their feed daily.

One of several reasons we do what we do... to give the public options outside that sort of thing.

I don't know why it would even be a surprise. Prophylactic medication of any kind is bad for the birds and bad for the environment. All it does is create animals with weak immune systems and bugs resistant to medication, and in this case for no other reason than to make the chickens grow faster or lay more productively.

Hi and

. If no information then we share lots of great pics. So excited to have you here with us. Got my first hatch of eggs coming out today. So if all goes well i will have cute chick pics in a few days time!

Morning all!! I have been around but have been trying to get the house and yard ready for me to start back to work soon. Need it to be easy maintenance. I went out this morning and fed my lil ones and my younger SSH had a watery eye and gunk around it. I cleaned her off and have her isolated. Went to check her a few minutes ago and she had gotten a wood chip stuck to her eye from all the watering but her eye is now swollen. I have added in some duramycin to her water to see if that helps. Any other ideas will be appreciated.

CAUTION! DUMB QUESTION TO FOLLOW!

I've got 6 chicks coming and they have to be outside not inside. I have a shady area under the back deck and it's protected and safe from the big chickens etc. So If it's 90 to 100 degrees during the day that's fine but do I really need a HEAT LAMP? for nigh-time temps that are in the high 70's? Aarrgghhh!!!!

How many of them are there? Enough that they can share body heat? I would totally hate using a heat lamp right now. Edit: I see other people answered. Also, I was an idiot and somehow missed you said six, so maybe we can just ignore this whole post, k?

Are they saying that the food producers are putting the antibiotics in the feed and not listing it on the bag or in the ingredient list? I would hope not. They could build up resistance to antibiotics when they ever do get sick or need them.
It's not the chickens that build up resistance to antibiotics. It's the bugs that build up the resistance, and then you can't kill them.

Subtherapeutic doses of antibiotics infuriate me. It's why we raise our own food, or buy it from people who raise it the way we believe in.
