***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Happy Hump Day friends and neighbors! I`m just west of Haskell so that looks just like my forecast.....I hope everybody and their critters does well during this extreme heat wave! Take care out there!

So, do pictures exist of these chickens? *slap* Snap out of it, MacGuyver! No more chickens! *backs away slowly*
Mine are either in a molt or generally uncooperative due to temps.. I borrowed one from Dr. Patterson to use here. This one is Black however I have young Blues I need to re-home.

Morning Okies! Whoo hoo sold 9 more birds last night the numbers are coming down at my place. I want all the younger birds gone by mid august so I can concentrate on our fall breeding pairs. So if anyone wants young roos for next to nothing holler, lol. Guinea eggs are still a cookin in the incubator, have a little under 8 dozen I will candle them tonight if I get home in time if not it will wait until Friday. Also need to set the last 3 dozen of those and then set Nathanael's opal eggs. He is driving me insane but he has 7 now to set so I told him we would do it tonight.

I am getting ready to go to Florida next week so this weekend will be busy for me trying to get pens all cleaned, fresh pine shavings down and waterers and feeders all washed. I know it won't get done while I am gone my son and hubby are great at feeding and watering but not so good about the other stuff. Besides hubby will be busy with 6 kids and the house to run.

Nana I love that field of sunflowers, we passed it the Sunday on our way to church. The little boys thought it was the neatest thing ever. Now they want their daddy to till up the back pasture and plant sunflowers, lol.

Well off to get some work done, it is going to be another busy, busy day. Hope everyone stays cool, I have my alarm set to remind me to text the hubby and have him turn the mister hoses on for the birds at noon. I need to get a timer for them so they can come on every so often during the day.

I know I warned you and you knew what you were getting into, but I still feel bad. He's such a beautiful rooster. I really believe (given the fact he's only a year old) that he's just got more testosterone than manners right now. Treats would be what I would use also. Make him associate everything good with you. I know some people beat the tar out of them and kick them and all that....but sheesh-they're birds and we're humans. We can outsmart them.

He charged me as soon as I opened the pen door. this was a 1st. The other time a grabbed him and held him for about 5 minutes and that calmed him down. What did you feed him?
.

Morning all, it is going to be a hot one, take care in the heat, stay hydrated and in the shade when you can, take extra care of the birds in this heat, have a good day!! Lynn

I have had luck with letting them have it with the water hose when they charge it cools them down and they forget about fighting, My experience beating the bird only plays into his want to fight he doesnt really care if he looses he will come right back for more when he can "only thing roosters love more than breeding is fighting"

As long as they think you are a challenge to them they will fight , I think the idea of trying to hold them and get them use to you is pretty good if you have the time.
After waterboarding Oreo and the results I am a huge fan of this method. This was exactly my experience when I was fighting back he would always come back for more later on, but so far he has not come back for more waterboarding.

Ok Tylan 50 given, found some mites on her so up early this morning and every bird on the place got dusted with sevin dust. the Polish is part of a trio so I won't put her in with any other birds but could she pass on the respiratory stuff to chicks if I hatch any? The other two seem fine, very indignant that I dusted them this morning, roo was puffing and squaking up a storm when I put him down LOL. The girls in the egg layer pen were a little indignant but all was forgiven with a little scratch grain and fresh grass!

Oh and all pens cleaned and dusted also. anything else I should do?
I like to use Ivermectin pour on, or Noromectin injectable for worms, lice, mites etc. then dust the pen or spray liberally al the walls roosts etc. with permethrin based insectacide. You can dip the birds in the permethrin as well to get rid of the mites quickly. That also helps with feather quality especially in this lovely heat we have right now.
The resp. problem could be from teh heat and humidity or a secondary indication of stress from the parasites. 1/2CC of Tylan 50 twice a day for 3 days will clear up the resp. problem but the bird may be a carrier you will know if it returns the next time the bird is stressed.

My columbian pullets are starting mature some more which finally cleans up the back and completes the lacing in the tail coverts. I am very pleased with the earlier pullets so hoping for more like this one or a bit better in the others coming up. This is one of my favorites from the earlier matings.
