***OKIES in the BYC III ***

BlanchardOK, I'm sure it's because of this awful heat. My Cochins aren't laying since it got so hot but my Orloffs and Faverolles are, which really surprises me.

And I just had a baby LF Cochin hatch in the incubator! The Brown Red hen laid an egg the day after OKRacefan took the Brown Red rooster. I stuck it in the incubator a few days later and the cutest little baby Cochin just hatched out of it

My 3 LF babys are finally looking cute. For weeks they looked like giraffes with feathers.

Lost 2 langshan in the heat. We lost the roo & hen from MJ. I had her check on them several times today & they had pans of cool water to stand in. The trees complelty shade their pen in the afternoon, not much else we could have done for them. We haven't yet lost a RIR or EE. Never lost one last yr either.
Tomorrow is going to be another scorcher. We will be @ farmers market early & hope to be done early.
Anyone imagine having 25000 chickens? Can't imagine even storing enough feed to get through the wk!
OH Bummer, the roo too! They are such pretty birds. I lost a Black Mottled pullet. She was fine yesterday but dead this morning. I so hate this heat!

Gonna try posting and see if it goes through- even taptalk isn't playing nice with byc....

still have all the birds, the little gray cochin pulled through, was sure she was a goner, the faverolles and the brahmas seem pretty heat tolerant- the one having the hardest time is my RIR hen, she is one of the oldest and just looks exhausted by the end of the day. My Serama, Joe is bacheloring it again, josie wants to hatch some more, think i may give her a couple silkies i have in the bator due to hatch next week-
ok, i have a cochin pullet that sneezes and at nite wheezes, i had her on denagard, no change- she is also very light, could it be gapeworm she is dealing with?

She had checked on them about 730 & all was good. By 9 they were both gone. I know scoots told me of a guy that has extra Roos, but we lost 3 out of 5 & our only other losses have been young birds from this yrs hatches. I think they are not made for this area. She moved the last 2 down to our main coop that has the swap cooler & such. Hopefully that pen is cooler & the stress of the move isn't too much.

I calld to day an they said they wer white leghorn's an they had ther beak's clipd they had 25,000 of thim..

Well, shoot. We don't care for leghorns and the clipped beaks on top of that...

I thought from the pics they would be white egg layers. Those don't set well with my customers. We'll have to think hard on it. Did they say when they would be available, Mike?

The girls say they are going to show, but who knows. Most of the birds are looking rough from the heat & have lots moulting.
Forgot the place also milled feed. Remember seeing that when I looked @ their site. People who bought there birds in the past say they are scrawny, need nails trimmed & usually won't go outside for a month or so. Think it is sad, wouldn't mind have a few so they could enjoy running on the grass & chasing grasshoppers but white birds never fair well here.

It was still so hot tonight only 1 guinea came in to roost. The rest are in the trees. Last summer they started roosting in the trees when it was this hot also. Once it cools off I will prob have to retrain them to go back in their coop. Why does everyone consider guineas to be so dumb when they are smart enough to take shelter in the woods & stay out of their coop when it is hot. Chickens come out early in the AM but always retreat back to their coop when it gets hot.

Isn't it funny how free range chickens can't lay white eggs? We have 2 birds that lay white eggs. I always make sure not to package them in our sale cartons.
