***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Christina, my birds are looking bleached out from the sun, does that happen to yours? They look faded. And even the ones without males in with them look like their feathers are tattered, what's up with that? Too many mud baths? They're wet a LOT from being under the sprinklers, maybe that dries their feathers out or something. They sit under the spray from the sprinkler in the shade and just shake the water off every so often. It must feel good

but they get to looking like drowned rats.
Mike, my Bantam Faverolles are laying like crazy also. Does your friend want LF or Bantams?
I don't have a sprinkler buy my chickens especially the lighter colored ones look faded and tattered too. I assumed it was the heat and sun (even though they spend the entire time in the shade their only time in the sun is to run to the next shade spot) I am going to start adding lard to thier feed as soon as I find a good source for it. That was a suggestion that Al made on another thread.

Well they say when it rains it pours and around me it's mostly true except in regards to the weather no rain here and it's dryer than a popcorn %$*&! LOL I went to see my Dr today to get a referral over the issue I had last Fri and wound up in the ER again this time not for my ticker my kidney decided it was time to introduce me to the joyous wonders of passing a stone (Oh joy!!) it's not a large one but I've never dealt with one before and hope once this one has gone its way I never have to do this again,
Hope everyone has a great night and a better tomorrow :)
Oh I hate kidney stones I used to get them at least once a year. Try to up your water intake, cut back on tea, coffee and soda. Also limit your calcium intake. You need to up your magnesium and vit. D intake. Kidney stones develope many times because your magnesium and vit D levels are low. Calcium needs magnesium and vit. d to attach itself to the cells and without it the body flushes the excess calcium from the body via the kidneys thus you get the stones. When they hit me I also add cranberry tablets to help ward off kidney and bladder infections. Get to feeling better soon!

I just felt phantom labor pains from my last round of childbirth 16 yrs ago-yeouch! Kidney stones are supposed to be right up there with labor pains so I'm feeling for you. I don't imagine the knowledge that it "wasn't a large stone" made you feel any better at the time, did it? Same as a 6 lb baby isn't any less painful than a 7 lb baby.
Bill, we're getting old. The 70's were a long long time ago

I wonder if flaxseed oil would be even better since it's got the Omega 3's. I might look into that.

Here's the tiny baby Cochin that was born last night, it's teeny tiny like a Bantam Cochin but he was born from a pullet egg and it might've been her very 1st egg. It's the 1st one she laid here anyway and she was almost 6 mo old. I hope he'll catch up quick. He'll have to live by himself for a few days then I'll put a couple of the Orloff babies in with him for company then add the rest a few days later. I'm really enjoying these babies.
The 2nd and 3rd pictures are 1 of the Orloff girls, the Silver Bantam Ameraucana and the Blue Bantam Ameraucana. The Blue boy is one of my favorites, they have such sweet personalities. The Silver is a hard color to find. I'd still like to find it in LF, they're colored like SIlver Duckwing girls when they feather in. The last one is my odd colored Auracana pullet. I really like the color but don't really know what color it is.

What breed are they? I am not an expert. I know my Cochins pullets sometimes start to lay at as young as 5 mo. but not all of them do. If I was a pullet, no matter what breed, i wouldn't want to start laying in this heat. :gig My Mottled Blue hen let everyone know when she layed today, talking/clucking on and on. She still isn't as vocal as my LF hen, Peaches, what a Diva! - definitely sings an Opera aria when she lays. She is broody now and gets a whole gallon of ice by her nest every day.

Ees buff orphs Cornish some mutts... ... Strange thing all mine living with Roos are laying just none of the free rangers

Soybean oil is in the feed mix recipe I have that the OSU ext created. I have giving my birds flaxseed & they enjoy it. I bought a 25lb bag of flax a long time ago & I add it in when I think about it-- no real method though. They say too much can influence egg flavor-- I have seen comercial eggs advertised as enriched or high in omgas. Don't remember how they worded it.

Mitzi, I don't know if my birds look bleached they just don't look as pretty. The Roos seem ok, but man some of the girls are moulting miserably!

Bill kidney stones are equal to labor pains IMO. I seriously was jump off the couch I was hurting so bad, but it was a good thing. They found my liver cyst because of the cat scan for the stones. So now I get annual cat scans just for fun!
Our water softener flushes water out once a day so there is a small puddle & muddy area by the well house. I keep finding the guineas in the mud there or by the AC drain. Much better than the grow out pen that was bathing in watermelon! Going to have some gross sticky chicks to deal with.
Birds already got some frozen treats & they are in for the day. In a few hours they can have more cold treats. Looked at the hourly forecast. Still suppose to be 100 degrees @9!!!
