***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Kimbroe, dogs sure will het the chickens but they usually kill them and and leave the bodies it seems. Cats or racoons will sneak in and snatch them and carry them off.
I want to tell you how sorry I am. i've lost several recently. Take forever to go around at night and lock up everyone.
What about a bob cat or coyote? I've heard the coyotes coming pretty close at night, never seen any here during the day. I did see a rather large bob cat crossing the road in the middle of the day about a week or so ago, only about 1/2 mile from here. I was outside and found another pile of feathers from my one of my red sex link hens. Good grief! Something is picking them off like candy. I was planning on thinning out my flock, but this isn't exactly what I had in mind.

Is anyone else experiencing a severe decline in egg production from their chickens? I can't recall when I have had so few eggs from the hens in both coop areas. I switched to Purina All Flock raiser last week in the hope the higher protein level would increase egg production and got a few more eggs yesterday and today, but 5 eggs is only a few more than the one per day I got for about 10 days and a whole lot less than the 2-3 dozen I was getting in June.

Tony- so with muskovy's can you just let them roam then i they sleep in the trees?

Oh yeah. I have a 7.5 foot tall fenced in area of about 5 acres to keep most varmints out, but that doesn’t keep my ducks, (or guineas, and a few chickens either) from flying over. They can fly better than many birds, and they can maneuver great. They go where they want to. It's nothing to see some on the roof of the house, especially in the evenings. From a stand still, they can take off straight ahead or straight up. Even the big, huge heavy drakes can fly great.

Some will sleep in the trees, some in with the chickens, but most just stretch out on the pond dyke for the night.

It never ceases to amaze me how some very large birds, like muscovey ducks, peacocks and turkeys that can barely walk it seems, but then take flight quickly when they feel threatened (like when I have a net and am trying to catch them

AMEN.......and the big Turkeys always fly and hit me right in the face just before they kick my butt amd tangle me in my own net!! LOL...Sad but true.

Awesome candleing pic....I think I see Neil Armstrong planting that flag......................OH wait....that's an egg insn't it.....That is a cool picture.....would make a great poster called "...in the beginning..."

I know I haven't hatched out any eggs in a year. When they are a little bigger and you can see the heart beating real good I want to do a little video.
Kavellion, you realize now they're ALL going to hatch lol That's what happens when you do a "set and see" hatch :)
Hopefully some of the chicks are nice and are keepers. The rest I will just give away. I actually enjoy hatching out eggs. Almost the funnest part of the whole thing.
