The Shawnee Show is one of the biggest inthis part of the country. I haven't been to the Tulsa Fair in years but from what I hear, I don't think the Tulsa Fair is even close.

Thanks again for making me feel welcome.

Are any of you guys going to the Newcastle show on the 4th of October? I'll be there to pick up some birds. It would be great to put some faces with all these names.

Carla, thank you so much for the adorable chickie! And thank you for making the trip to bring it to me. Everybody at work loved it too.

It and my Sultan both think they're people, though, so they're still a little weirded out with each other. *ha*

You're welcome. I tried to pick out the cutest one for you with the puffiest topknot. I'm sure they'll love each other soon. That poor silkie sure was upset, chirping loudly when I put it in the box all by itself. Luckily my sister took pity on it and finally picked it up and held it most of the drive. It shut up immediately and tucked it's head in the fold of her hand, and pecked lightly. She thought it was adorable ... but it hasn't changed her mind to want chickens. The first thing she did when we got to Atwoods was head straight to the bathroom to wash her hands!

I'm glad we went to Atwoods too, because they had some pecan trees in stock. I bought two!

oh! Atwoods has Pecan Trees?

I need to get some.

Poultry and bees, I didn't even think about the benefits that they would have on my garden and fruit trees! I don't have them either yet, but I will, and the thought of keeping all of these plants that I want to get, alive and producing well has been a little intimidating.

Do they have a farming for dummies book?

Yes they do actually, contact your local extension office for pamplets or call the Dept of Forestry for assistance. If they are as helpful as the Ag, Dept you will have it made! Maybe visit OSUs website for tips too.

Yes, Atwoods has a recent shipment of fruit trees and some pecan trees! Hurry before they're all gone! They all look great ... actually a foot or 2 taller than the ones I bought this spring. I just planted my 2 new pecan trees tonight, although it sure did hurt ... I hurt my back earlier in the week trying to fix the fence so that my 2 pyrenees pups would quit leaving the property through the creek. Either I hurt it when falling on my a** or when stacking concrete blocks against a hog panel and the concrete bridge.

okiemommy, and everybody else wanting info on trees, bees, gardening, poultry, etc., you should check out the OSU extension. There are all kinds of fact sheets that you can download there, and you might even decide to take a class with them! I sure wish I had the time! Anyway, here's a link, and you can type in the search block whatever you're searching for, ie., poultry, pecan trees, fruit trees, etc. and you will find all types of info! http://pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/HomePage

Regarding bees ... I was listening to AM radio last Monday, and a lady was telling about some pesticide for crops that Bayer recently released that is extremely toxic to honey bees. The instructions say not to apply when crops are flowering, but who's going to do that? Apparently there's been a drastic reduction of honey bees lately. Perhaps that's one of the reasons. Gosh, I hope we can stop the decline of bees. I love honey, and use it for sweetener in cereal and tea instead of sugar. Please don't let bees disappear!

Carla, glad you got some trees! I'll try to get pictures of the chickies. The Sultan's about two weeks older than the Silkie, but the Silkie looks HUGE next to her! *ha*

There's a TON of honey bees around our Atwoods. So if you head to Chickasha Atwoods, look out for spilled cokes in the parking lot. That's where they congregate during the day.

Folks just need to remember that honey bees are not agressive unless they are defending their hive (think mama bear defending cubs since the hive contains the bee babies) or you are swatting at them. If one lands on you, don't swat at it and unless you are within a few feet of their hive, they are not likely to sting you. By the way, if you do get stung, brush off the stinger or pull it out - then put honey on the sting. The honey will help the sting from hurting.

Also, as countyroad indicated, the bees like anything with sugar - so be careful when drinking from a pop can that has been sitting unattended outside. A sting on the lip makes you look like the doc got carried away with an injection of collagen to make your lips more full.

Anyone been to the Claremore Atwoods, I got an add in the mail today and they still have Day olds listed. Im wanting to go pick up some more bantie's and pullets. Anyone know what kind of selection they have or are pullets just all mixed together? Hoping to be going up there Thursday. Or maybe after work on Wedsnday.
