I agree with that! Its real easy to overrun yourself fairly quickly if you don't have that mindset, this I know.

It's probably because they just "pulled" the band.

Tell them to cut the flat part of it with a pair of scissors (yes...I know it's medal) or wire cutters. It'll "slide" out of the hole since it is a fairly new wound. If they wait longer...it'll start to seal up and then you've got to work it out.

Cammie, I am taking my pair of White Call ducks, trio of Hamburgs, little Spitzhauben pullet, and MF d'Uccle pullet to Newcastle

And I am so sorry that you may have to get rid of your little Sultan

Maw, I won't be able to make it to the ChickenStock, no matter how much I would Love to!! We have to be out of town that day, the day before, and the day after, so there is no way it can fit

Grace, I didn't know you had a Spitzhauben! What color? I'm so excited, I will actually be getting to go to Newcastle! I can't wait to see your Calls, I've only seen the pictures. I'm not sure what time I will be going; I'm trying to talk hubby into coming. I will see you there!

mikarod, I bet you're right, it was probably some of the older chicks that they were having problems with. I don't know what the deal was. Since so many people buy them without really knowing what they're getting in to, I just always advised them to leave the bands alone.

I saw them on your website. Pretty birds.
I need some Buffs because I need a tight feathered buff chicken for a project I have been working on. It hasn't worked out like I wanted using Buff Orpingtons but I will keep trying with them as well.

I wouldnt mind if they did have some Barred or White rocks, ive been wanting some. Thanks for the replys. Ive never bought baby chicks with a metal band in there wings before, sounds like it would get infected or make a weird growth. Cant wait to make it up there Thursday.

Oh it's EASY to take out.

I DO put some peroxide on the wing...but that's it. I take it off the MOMENT they get home. Otherwise...the wing "heals" and grows around the metal making it painful for both you and the bird to remove.

Grace, do you know what time they will start judging Saturday? (It is this Saturday, right?) Do you remember how late it went last year? Clark is wanting to go after we move cattle, but I'm afraid that will be too late. He may be moving them without me.

If you get pullets from Atwoods, they will have bands. I hold the chick in one hand, and stretch out the wing with the band with my other hand. You will see that the end has a little twist to it....not the part that is actually around the wing bone. I just un-twist that little twist with my fingers, then gently thread the band backwards through the opening in the wing until I work it back through. I go slow, and gently. If the chicks are a bit older, you may have to wiggle it to loosen it from the skin before threading it out. Not a biggie if you go slow, and I've never had one bleed or anything. I do hate them, though, and hate removing them. I bought some last year, but this year, all of my stuff was hatched from quality eggs. I too have learned I like quality over quantity.

(oh yeah, I got a few banties the other day for my son from Atwoods...his first little "flock"...lol)

I tried to contact Terry once and never got a response. I've heard that he has some great birds but I don't know if he has any for sale. I don't think he's on these boards.
