Ronnie that sounds like the coolest thing. I know we had a BB Tom at a feed store where I used to work, and he would sidle up to me if I was doing something outside. He would just lean on me until I gave him some scratching. He was awesome!

P.S. I wouldn't cull that chick unless it started having problems or you wanted it for breeding purposes.

Okiemommy my neighbors have at least 6 Royal Palms running around. There kids are homeschooled and spend alot fo time outdoors. From 15 years old to 6 months (they have 5 kids). They turkeys dont bother the kids. But they will fallow them around when not ranging. Of course the 6month old isnt running around outside witout mommy watching him.

I have a pair of Royal Palms I got from Monty last month. He got to come and visit them today and they are free ranging and are left out at night on top of the coop, their choice not mine. I have a 10 yr old a 7 year old a 5 year old and an 18 month old that are outside with the turkeys and they dont bother the kids at all. Now my girl will run off the ducks and the dogs. She just does not like them at all. These 2 are going to be my breeders for next spring so I can cull and have them for dinner.

I saw a post on here a little while back about someone looking for SQ Barred Rocks. Luvz2 has some roos if anyone is interested. (Plus about 87 million other kinds. I got dizzy looking at all of them.
Thanks luvz for letting me hang around and look at all the chickens.
Monty

RonnieAtkeson, I would not cull that cute little chick! Many times chicks have crooked toes, and it does not affect their life style at all!

Luvs, what a tempting list! What are your prices? Do you happen to be going to any poultry shows here in OK that we could meet up at?

I would/might be interested in all the d'Uccle, d'Anver, and Favorelles, and in the Splash, Buff Laced, and Red Polish.

kkm,

Stimpy (and anyone else that will be at Newcastle), I will be wearing a blue, long-sleeved, button up shirt that has chickens embroidered on the pocket. Looking forward to see you (all) there

And, Stimpy, if you are willing to 'risk' it now, I can bring you some test eggs from my bantams. Thanks.

DutchChic, I'll get back to you

Do you happen to be going to the Newcastle show??

gracefulBantams,

We ARE planning on going to newcastle tomorrow. My friend will be wearing fall colored brown short sleeved shirt. With 3 kids in tow. I wont be able to make newcastle, and I am about 30 miles from Newcastle. I do not have enough cages to carry all them that you listed you want. Maybe meeting up here tomorrow after the show.???? I can PM you with my number if you would like.

I never heard of turkeys attacking. I know they will rub and lean on ya if ya let them... Come to think of it... that's kinda wierd too! But I don't mind turkeys sidling and shimmying... Maybe I need medication.... hmmmm

Maybe I AM a turkey...actually my birthday is on Thanksgiving this year! That explains it all!

I have been raising turkeys since 2001 and have had both the "mean" turkey tom and my current "pet" tom. The turkey hens I have had were usually "touch me nots"

Tom turkeys can be mean if you don't start out, when they are poults, handling them and talking to them. I bought my first Tom turkey at the flea market. He was full grown and we had to really keep an eye out for him or he would fly up and try to spur us. Needless to say, we decided to get rid of him when he scared one of the grandsons.

My current tom is a pet that I hatched and then carried around for three days so he would be quiet. He doesn't know he is a turkey and is so tame that people come from all over the neighborhood to watch him strut his stuff and he really likes to have his head and his waddles petted.

All that to say that whether a turkey is mean, a touch me not or a pet, depends a lot on how it is handled from the time it is small.

I have been given roosters from time to time that would try to draw blood on the man of the house, but the female could pet the rooster without problems. In my experience, once a rooster or a tom turkey becomes agressive toward anyone, there isn't much you can do to permanently stop the behaviour, short of turning them into soup.

Stimpy.... Thank you for your service. My son-in-law was in the Marines. Served two tours in Iraq. He was in the first group to go into Ramadi.

I say was, but he still carries himself, and acts like a Marine. Flies the Marine flag outside of his home. I am very proud of him.
