I just wondered outside to check on my "new" kids and the rest of the flock and my new bantam wyandottes left me a gift!!!! An eggie!! Should I incubate it?? They are so ardorable and good natured. They are all tucked in a rabbit hutch wrapped in plastic and the bantam brown leghorns are on the other side.

Hubby just came in the house with a brand new calf!! It is dry but cold. We will watch her for a while the tuck her and mom in the barn. It is 14 degrees outside. I HATE calving this time of year, but with our OLD cows we was afraid to change thier cycle.

Well off to play with a baby calf in my laundry room

Slightly cracked I hope your feeling better! At least it was after the show. It was so much fun. And I missed the chicken stock this year-it was the hubby's bday. It's been so cold here but everyone-chickens and goats are locked in their pen and with the heater and lamp going it keeps it decently warm in there. Water is constantly froze though so I've been breaking ice every couple of hours.

Me too with the ice.... Couldn't get the lids off the waterers. Finally said screw it and brought them in the house to use hot water. That was about an hour ago... probably froze over all ready...

hope it's a little warmer tomorrow.

What good is cold weather if its not going to snow!? There's no other reason for cold, so it needs to let up!

Slightly cracked, congrats on the calf! Is she really inside your house? We had two heifers calve last December. They were two I had picked out from somewhere (not from our original herd) so my husband was worried to death about them. He stayed up all night with one! And when the second finally calved, his mother and sister happened to be there. And called the vet when they saw the feet coming first...

Monty, we missed you at Shawnee! And me, Grace, and Carla really did keep looking for you!

We need to start deciding now when everyone can meet next year, so we don't have any problems.

Okay, I read the thread about Chickenstock. I am so excited. I have the most wonderful idea about the costume contest!

I can't wait. Will it be held at the same place? It's supposed to be April / May time frame right?

It was great seeing Carla and Grace, and I got to meet countyroad1330.

I ended up with a bunch of chicks from Carla - silkies, a few turkens, and a cuckoo marans.

I didn't buy anything at the show. I saw a trio of red bantam shamo and wanted them but they were already sold.

My daughter defected and wants pigeons now.

Did anyone see the movie Bolt? The animation they did for the pigeons is priceless!

What a fun life! I love it out here... ya just never know. This morning was so much better without the dang wind. Even though there is frost on everything and some ice.... it is still wayyyy better than yesterday! Hennies are still laying pretty good. I'm trying to keep them warmer by propping their door half open so it blocks cold. I have one lamp in each section and it keeps it about 25-30 in there overnight. I'm happy with that. Banties are shivering though....

Ok I have to ask. What more can I do?
I have been losing a chicken or two every night since it turned cold.
They are inside, have a light, straw on the ground, plenty of feed and water.
They haven't been acting sick. These are all about six months old.
I haven't lost any of my grown chickens but during the cold snap a week or so ago I lost two nine month old Cuckoo Maran roosters. They were in a separate pen.
I can't bring them all in the house or I will be down at the hen house sleeping by myself.
Any suggestions?
I have had chickens for over forty years and I can never remember losing them to the cold like this.
When I lived at home, all of our chickens roosted in trees and we never lost any to the cold.
Thanks

OK Sooner fans... this one is pretty good!

Coach Mack Brown, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven,
God showed him around. They came to a nice little house with a small Longhorn
flag in the window.

"This house is yours for eternity, Mack," said God. "This is very
special; not everyone gets such a cozy house up here."

Mack felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house. On his way up the
porch, he noticed another house towering above the others just down the
street. It was a multi-story mansion with a Crimson and Cream sidewalk, a 50 foot tall flagpole with an enormous OU Sooner flag, and in every window
he could see Sooner fans laughing and watching replays of past OU games.

Mack looked at God and said, "God, I don't want to sound ungrateful, but I
have a question. I was a good coach, I went to 7 consecutive bowl games, won
a national championship, and turned around the Texas program."

God asked, "So what do you want to know, Mack?"

"Well, why does Bob Stoops get a better house than me?"

God chuckled, and said "Mack, that's not Bob's house, it's mine."
