Have you ever been to the Jones auction? We went once ... sure would like to go again but it's the same day & time as the Blanchard auction. I just love to see what people bring, and visit with Okies we've met! Of course, it's hard to keep my dearest from wanting to bid on everything he sees too!

Not that I don't have a problem too

Hennypennies, I love the Christmas Picture! And Congrats on your hubby's accomplishment! Is he practicing to be Santa too? I think he'd make a great one!

Today, Gerald and I met some really nice people today in Crescent ... bought some awesome marans eggs & chicks. I don't know if I want to divulge my newly found source of marans eggs & chicks though

Hopefully they'll join the forum ????

Wow! I didn't know ya'll lived near there! Yep ... lots of beautiful short horses. I haven't talked Gerald into acquiring a fondness for any hay burners unfortunately, so I tried not to stare at them. I'm thinking if we ever get a critter that eats grass ... it'll be a longhorn steer ... but I don't know how to get one's horns to turn down instead of up! Hook 'em horns! BOOMER SOONER! & GO POKES!

Henny, that is TOO cute!!!

My hubby wouldn't get caught doing something like that.

Tell your hubby congrats on the exam score, that's an accomplishment!

Carla, you could put weights on the horns...??? Just make sure you get a red and white one.

Well the way to get them to turn down is to subject the critter to bitterly cold temps that freeze them. Some of them that come from Montana and the Dakotas will have one or both horns turned down. I read that it takes temps of -20 for at least a week to do it.

Now on the Herford and other cattle they use weights but I doubt that would work on a Longhorn. The base of the horn is just too stout.

Gene also holds auctions over at the Logan Co. fairgrounds at least twice a year and horses come in from all over. I've seen some nice ones that were just a tad tall for standard go for as little as 350 dollars. Do you have his web address? It's a pretty neat site. I've talked to them a little at the sale and they seem really nice and are passionate about what they do.

Les, Thanks for the info on how to turn the horns down! & Cammie, yes red & white or more specifically crimson & cream would be excellent colors! Oh, I guess I'd better not ... Texans would get wind of it and my poor longhorn would get stolen & unspeakable things might be done to it!

Yeah, I love the website of Gene's. I guess I should share it with everyone. It's http://www.highhopesacres.com/ I hope he doesn't mind me sharing it! We got the pleasure of meeting Gene's wife also, along with their twin grandbabies (who were enjoying lunch while we were there).

Do they have one like I want? Yeah, I guess I don't really need one.

You never know ... if I keep convincing Gerald to go to auctions ... and if there's ever more for around $350 or less ... maybe a mini horse would be nice & he'll eventually soften up & buy me one. At the Blanchard auction, a handsome male llama didn't even bring $50. Wow, prices for fancy critters have certainly gone done because of the economy & probably because of the winter too.

Oh my! Was that during the last poultry auction or another night of the week?

I wonder if I could manage to sneak away from home & buy one and it mysteriously appear on our property?

I like this one. I mean what could you really do if you just have a stray mini horse come up to the house???
