Big Q : sounds like the start of a good day, nice and relaxing. I have to gather up christmas decorations today so the girls can get going on decorating everything, while I rush out to the local watering hole with some of the boys to watch a game then I am off to the sale barn to hang out with chicken junkies.

I have been up since 6:00am researching some stuff I need to bid a job. I am still in my Pajamas and robe though LOL.

So your going to get those heated waterers started today, yeah I guess it is time to start plugging things in out here too. I was a little amazed to find the temps in the last two days were below freezing, but the waterers in the coops didn't have any ice anywhere on them.

Frozen fish on a stick!!! It's cold outside. I'm thrilled that my chickens don't seem to mind. It has taken all morning to feed and water my flock because my hands keeps getting numb. When I can't carry the bucket or hold the scoop, I come in and warm up.

I ordered some gallon sized heated water dishes from Rural King. They had them for $14.00, on sale for $12.00, so I got one for each pen plus an extra. Now I need to get some outdoor extension cords and weather worthy plug strips to make the whole thing work. I've got six jury rigged right now. I thought my Speckled Sussex Roo was going to take a bath when he discovered that the water was warm. He dunked his whole face in and shook like a puppy. I dried his wattles (over his objections) and need to check on him again soon. Maybe this is where the expression, "Your face will freeze like that," comes from.

Pretty birds Donna!

Cold is bad. I guess I should stop fixating on how much I hate it and get on with life, though.

My girls survived another night in the coop, but I'm noticing some black spots on some combs - my little floppy-combed brown leghorn is the one I'm most concerned about. Does the Vaseline thing really work to help prevent frostbite?

I should be putting up Christmas lights outside today...but I want it to get warmer first.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Saturday - stay warm and safe and be happy!!

Okay Donna - I'm going to display my ignorance, but I think the roo and hen in your first photos might be splash Orpingtons - they both look Orpy to me. I agree on the Barred Rock hen and the EE.

Here's a list of Okies and other BYC'ers planning to attend the 2009 Oklahoma Poultry Association Show December 12-13 in Shawnee, OK. The venue is the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center located at 1700 W. Independence. Here's a link to directions: http://www.shawneeexpo.com/map-directions/

Insofar as my birds have had no frostbitten combs or wattles since I started coating with vaseline several years ago, I'd say,"Yes." My dozen or so Old English Game Bantams are the only ones treated.

Roy are you wanting the little barred chicks? If so, I think I should warn you that one is suicidal. Jordan just found it floating in the stock tank. They refuse to stay with the other teenagers and have moved out to live with the adult birds. The swimmer is doing fine. We brought it in and dried the feathers. He is hanging out in the ferret cage until completely dried out. The ferret cage is huge and they only stay at the bottom. I put the bird at the top, so everyone is good.

My little EEs can't seem to shake this URI. I'm thinking of culling them. One has been sick for 2 weeks and the other for only 1. But they just seem to be getting worse. These birds have been weak since they hatched. I think I am better off without them. Although I really wanted some girls to go witht he cockeral that Jordan got at POOPS. All three of the EEs that have made it this far appear to be pullets.

Well my tank warmer is keeping the ice at bay so far. The smaller birds have heat in their coop so their water doesn't freeze. I am seriously waiting impatiently for warmer weather. I still haven't put up any Christmas decorations. It is just too cold for me to get outside and do it. I need to get the tree put up this weekend. I have been working so much that I haven't had time to do much of anything. The company Christmas party is this evening, so I will be out of the house again. Hope everyone stays warm.
