yep yep yep the leg band trick. yes that works. I think my thing is I have the incubator so that will do for my chick fix. He knows nothing what so ever about all the eggs I have ordered. they should all start arriving tuesday or wednesday, just gotta make sure he is not here when they come in.

Hi Luvz, my folks may have known your folks, my parents moved back to Glencoe to build a home and retire. There is a big feed store in Edmond that does custom mixes for a bout anything, can't remember the name right now but it is off of main street about a block or two west by the railroad tracks and you can see the big siloes right in the middle of town, I know what ya mean about baby chicks, they just seem to jump in my basket every time I get near some?!?!?!?!?!

My husband doesn't care one thing about chickens. And he knows I've set some eggs in the incubator. He's been telling me to wait until we own our own house-14 years now-and I finally said no I'm gonna do it now. So in Feb 08 I went down to Atwoods and bought me 20 chicks. Been going since then. I guess he's give up and just living with it. He was raised on a turkey farm so he's turkey and chickened out!

I feed my own mix! Well to grown birds...mix corn, wheat, milo, and cat food, and I really want some sunflower seeds but will have to wait for that harvest...nothing else grown out here! I use evergreen feeds...cheaper than anybody else...I use the medicated starter and feed the layer to my quail...I do buy purina game bird starter for the baby quail...only thing with 30% protein

Ya'll have fun I am going to church...a whole block away!

I would love to see pics of your pallet pens. I have to wait on my hubby to get in the mood to build before I can get anything done. Right now I am needing a couple of small chicken tractors built and a rabbit hutch.

I have seen a "cottage" that is their grandkids play house that I would love to make into a chicken coop. Dont know if I can post a link to the pic from their site tho, may be against the rules here. If I can then I will. I cant copy their pics from there they are copyrighted.

I think old pallets would make the cutest cottage coop.

when I raised fighting games we made round top pens out of a 2x4 frame 4'x4' and took 8' of wire and bowed it up and attache it to the frame on opposit sides, then cut a piece as tall as the top dome point and wired them to front and back, cut a door out in the front panel about 2' square and cut another piece that would overlap the door cut out about 2 to 4 inch and atteched it on the inside of the door frame with wire at the top only then pull it closed and tie on bottom corners with wire to close, quick, easy and relatively cheap, for shade and rain ptotection take a piece ot tar paper (roofing felt or the gravel covered type) about 8' and lay over the back section of the dome and run baling wire across from frame to frame in three spots, front, middle, and back, lay a post or branch acros the frame under the tar paper and attach to frame. These are easy to move and we used cut out landry detergent jugs in the front corners attached to the wire for feed and water. if you are worried about wind turning them over, put a stake in at an angle on the corners or wire a cement block to each corner or use a piece of chain on a cement block with a dog snap to attach it and remove it for moving purposes, sorry a little long winded but hope you can figure out what I am talking about, you can make thes fancier by trimming the front and back panels to match the dome shape and sometimes I used pieces of tin overlaped for a more permanent top. You can make then wider, longer and taller if you want with the same instructions, may need to add cross supports if you go too tall or wide, have made them 4x6 or 8 foot and 6 foot tall and it works good to. The big day is finally here, 1 yr older today and the DW & DD are making it very special for me. I get to lay around and watch sports while they cook my favorite dinner, and they even offered to do the coop chores. Life is truly fine today.
