Really hoping to get the fence completed today!!!!

We just have one more side of around 120 feet, but all the other stuff (setting poles, burying the liner fence etc) is complete, so it will just be a matter of stretching and securing this section.

I was hoping to have the girls out by today, but even if we get the fence complete, this next few days neither one of us will be home for large chunks of time, so guess we'll wait until Sunday afternoon, so we can be here to monitor any unforseen problems.

The first area we have set aside for them for the first few weeks, probably until they are 8-10 wks old has a cover, but when we let them out in the big run there is no cover, and I am confident they will be able to fly over the fence height. How old before you can clip thier flight feathers? I have read on several threads they usually don't fly up and over unless they have a place to perch on the top first, has this been your experience? We think the fencing is secure from our animals, and the coop is very secure

, but if they fly over into the yard my little wiener dog would chase I am sure. I've been working w/ him, but his prey drive is quite high.

I would think that it was more than a miracle if I could get that many eggs out of my hens. I am always curious as to what folks do differently than I do, to get such a high percentage of eggs from their laying flock. I feel fortunate to get 12 eggs a day out of 25 layers.

Well, I went to the durant poultry auction last night

There was a pretty good turnout, but I didn't get a good idea of what prices were like since we left while they were still selling the out side stuff. There were some pretty nice cages there, though I didn't buy any. Some three tiered divided cages went for $55 each, and there was also a neat 12 compartment wooden broody hen cage (or at least me and Dandelion007 decided it would be great to use for broodies...)

I don't think there is a set "formula" for clipping wing feathers, other than the smaller the size of the pen in relation to the number of birds within, the more likely they are to fly over the fence. I don't clip the wings on any of my adult birds and seldom have a problem with them flying over the fence - except when I am trying to confine them to a pen that is about 6 foot by 12 feet. As long as they have plenty of room to run around, mine seem content to stay within the parameters of the fence.

The guineas and turkeys on the other hand, sometimes decide to explore for bugs on the outside of the fence and then forget that they flew over the fence in the first place, so spend the day running up and down the fence trying to get in through the chain link.

The "run" for the 23 chickens is 50 feet by 120 feet. So I'm seriously hoping they will be happy w/ that and I won't have to clip those gorgeous wings that I have been wanting them to grow!!!!! I know you clip the area that can't be seen the flight feathers, it's just the principle!

Two chicks = Twice the excitement!

And I'm so behind the curve that the brooder isn't even set up yet. Oh, well. It will only take a few minutes and the hatched can keep calling the unhatched out of their shells.

I'm glad that something is going good. I had put one of my white quail in the hospital pen after the cat attack; it didn't look injured, but it wasn't acting right. I went to check on them this morning and it didn't make it.

I have another batch of quail due in a couple days, tho. Between chicken chicks and quail chicks I should have enough little fuzzies to cheer me up and keep me happy.

Congrats on the new hatch-lings. Hope your quail population grows rapidly Kwartel , and the kitty problem is solved. I'm thinking about getting into quail. Getting close to cold weather... but I don't know if I can wait until spring.

Good Afternoon everyone, hope you all are having a good day.

Thought I'd post the question again but I was wondering if anyone knew of or had some Buff Orpingtons I am wanting to put quite a few BO eggs in my bator and I have a friend that is wanting some also, I have hens that are laying but they are in with RR red roo's and I have two BO roo's that I was going to put with them but I'm a bit afraid to if those hens have something that might make them ill,

Maribeth I do like the "Wears a cool hat" LOL I've been trying to come up with something unique that isn't related to some of the names that I have been called reciently
