Okies in the BYC The Original

Do any of the Okies have any pullets or eggs of Blue Jersey Giants, Marans of any variety, or Welsummers they would like to sell? I am not looking for anything that is show quality - I just like the dark eggs as a novelty. I have had some Black Jersey Giants in the past and like the size of them - but have never seen Blue Jersey Giants for sale except from the Sand Hill Preservation site and they are already sold out for 2008.

I am going to try and go to the Harrah auction this coming Saturday 4/5. I have never been to that particular auction and ya'll make it sound very interesting.

My 4 year old grandson convinced me to start the incubators, so I would like to hatch something other than my own eggs. (why is it that we are never quite satisfied with what we have of our own?)

Countyroad, I sent a PM back. I sure hope you bring Clark with you to the Cement auction on Saturday. I think if you get him around birds more, he may be able to build up a tolerance for them ... if not, maybe some allergy medicine is all he needs!

Poultry & Bees, I sent another PM to you. Yes, you should go to the Harrah auction if you're looking for marans eggs. I ONLY bought 7 dozen there last night! I won't be there next Saturday, because we're going to Cement's auction, so ... you won't have me bidding against you on any eggs

Ok, I don't have room for any more eggs anyway.

Oh, and there were a couple dozen Welsummers eggs there too ... but Jimd snagged them. Maybe there will be some there next Saturday. I'd like to try some of those Welsummers, myself.

Yeah, Buckguy, I would love to trade for your Jersey hen .... but I don't think I have any hens you'd be interested in ... unless you want a Silkie, Brabanter or Spitzhauben or some Jersey Giant eggs (Blue, Black & Splash), or some call ducks or eggs? Or eggs from my silkies, spitzhaubens & brabanters? The only marans I have are chicks from eggs I've bought through ebay, eggbid, and ovabid & searching the internet for marans breeders & then there's the eggs I bought at Harrah last night. If you think you could make it to the Harrah auction in 2 weeks, I could bring some of my chicks I have & see if you'd like to swap ... and see if you want some of those chicks that may be campines. I might could swap some naked neck pullet chicks too, if you're interested or you could just sell your hen to me ... or put her in the auction & I'll bid on her!

Hello everyone!
I am still trying to catch up.

Cammie, Make Clark sleep on a feather pillow and maybe he can build up an immunity. Either that or you might want to rethink this wedding thing.

Carla, If you want the Giant hen I may sell her to you. I can't decide what I am going to do ( breeding wise) this year and its almost too late to start. Are you looking for Orpington's as well?
I really want to get down to about three breeds but I am so fickle I can't decide which ones to sell.
If you find a Maran or Welsummer hen at Cement, let me know and I will sure trade you even stevens. If not I could still probably sell her to you.
Have you looked on Feathersite at the Campine chicks? I would like to see what you have but I won't be in Cement this weekend.

I just got done replying to a PM about that. As of right now, there are quite a few people interested (well, 4 - to be exact

Hello,

I am new here. countyroad sent me after I contacted her on craigslist wanting some of her stuff, but I cannot apparently have it. I am annoyed and wanting to change the (stupid and pointless) law in Norman. Here is something I posted: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=42613 if anyone is local and can help support then feel free to contact me.

Sorry countyroad, I cannot have your little blue guy...

Hopefully will get some chickens and post here more often,

Erin

Ugh cannot sleep....

To help I guess you could go look at the thread and give suggestions and how to title and modify the petition rough draft I posted. You could also mention it to your friends and family in Norman and tell them to look for it after I put it up and sign it.

Ehurt,
I read your frustration regarding the city of Norman's rules on domesticated farm animals and have posted some practical suggestions to your post on that thread.

In the meantime, if you want to "babysit" a couple of hens for me, so you can see what it is like to have poultry for a few weeks, let me know. I am just up the road from Norman and could loan you a few hens so you can see what is involved in keeping a sanitary home for them.

OUR FIRST ATTEMPT AT A HATCH!
OKay so here it goes. Everyone say some prayers and keep your fingers crossed.

Sunday we finished our brooder nests and got the girls moved. Two of them warmed up quite well and one is kinda iffy. So last night we checked and all three were comfortably settled in, so we made the exchange and this is how it went...

Hen #1(RIR)...handled it very well, didn't leave the nest but did let us make the exchange.

Hen #2(RIR)...acted like a fool and didn't want to get back on her nest, but she did finally settle down on them.

Hen #3(NHR)...sat tightly to the nest and made DH and I both bleed during the exchange. But then pulled all the eggs tightly up under her.

So todays update...
Hen #1 is still doing fair, but seems to be getting up more than I would like.
Hen #2 has her eggs quite scattered and now showing litlte interest. I am so worried about her.
Hen #3 won' t budge. Good broody! Gave her some scratch and she will reach to get it but will not leave the nest. Although when I reached under her to make sure they were good and warm (and she made me bleed again),I discovered she had contributed one VERY large egg, so I removed it. I mean this thing was the size of a turkey egg.

I don't think I will make it 21 days without having a nervous breakdown!

I will be saving up for a bator very quickly!

your doing great don't worry the hens will take care of everything. well my first set just hatch out of 75 going in one day one I ended up with 21 in the hatcher and so far 12 have hatched. We still have 5 more sets in the incubators and after the 5th set has hatched on the 7th we will be hatching out every 7 days, as to be able to clean the bators and hatcher, but our breeding program seems to be paying off as far as the chicks go. but will not see final results till next spring, but its all worth it.
